I often ask why I am still on this app when it seems the blue tick brigade have become rabid! 🏳️‍🌈

@ROJINAAKTAR @DreyfusJames You know being gay back then was actually illegal? Of course they weren’t out as being LGBT+, some trailblazers were but the majority of people were not. Even into the 1980’s and the advent of section 28, very few people in the public eye were openly LGBT+

@ffenics @DreyfusJames Erm the fact they weren't lumped in as LGBTQ+ advocates. The community might not have existed 30 years ago but still. They were household names on primetime with their own talkshows

Danny La Rue was a female impersonator. Barry Humphries played Dame Edna as a comedy character. Les Dawson & Roy Barraclough played Cissie & Ada as comedic tributes to the women of their times. Kenny Everett played Cupid Stunt as an OTT American starlet character. Again not drag. Hinge & Bracket were old-school musical vaudevillians. Harris Milstead (Divine) was a character actor & part-time drag queen, whose act wanted to be taken seriously. Lily Savage (Paul O’Grady) was an old-school drag queen, whose act was based on the tough women he grew up with. Regina Fong (Reg Bundy) was another old-school vaudevillian, whose act was camp, very funny & inventive, relying on repetition of a routine that the audience would know & emulate. They’d join in. None of these performers exhibited a deep-rooted loathing for women, & yet are now tarred with the same brush as modern day “drag queens”. You CANNOT compare these artistes with the talentless, runway, slut-dropping, sashaying wannabes, that people refer to as “drag queens” today, many of whom lampoon & degrade women in deeply misogynistic ways. (See Ru Paul’s Drag Race). They are not the same thing. Style-wise, they have much more in common with the various Houses (LaBeija, ‘68, Corey, ‘72, Xtravaganza ‘82, Ninja, ‘82, Ebony ‘78) & the Tea Dances & later the Ballroom Dances of New York, where gay men would dress up & “throw shade”. Learn the difference.

@ROJINAAKTAR @DreyfusJames What has being straight and happily married got to do with it? So are some drag performers these days. You could say exactly the same for anyone in the entertainment business, there are thousands of times more people in the business now and many more outlets for it.

@ffenics @DreyfusJames No they weren't actually-far frm it. They were respected as unique entities most were straight even happily married and they didn't divide or segregate audiences. Trailblazers maybe but not aimless sheep

@ROJINAAKTAR @DreyfusJames They absolutely were jumping on a ‘bandwagon’ of their time. Just because times have changed and the bandwagon is now much more huge and varied enabled by the fact the whole world can now communicate in an instant.

@DreyfusJames @ffenics All the artist+ personalities he just mentioned weren't jumping on any bandwagon that lumped them with others and they were respected and admired even by what would be known as bigots etc today

@AllKindsOfTruth @gigglesandrage @HelenWebberley I disagree. Male and Female humans are both just humans; one plays one role in reproduction and the other plays another role to enable our species to reproduce. Other than reproductive role there is no difference between male and female humans.

@MaugerMarcus @HelenWebberley Some men are genetically female and some women are genetically male. Nobody changes that, it’s just the variations in humans. Why do you think someone can change their genotype? You need to go learn some human biology!

@ffenics @DreyfusJames thats a false equivalence and you know it and just like every other lefty you have to move the goal posts because you know you're wrong and just like every other lefty you have to get the last word in to make you feel superior as though that makes you correct goodbye

@InFearOfKeir @DreyfusJames Thats your opinion. You are allowed it but it doesn’t mean it’s correct! Many people like alternative drag. Not every human has to have the same sense of humour or taste in performance. Why do you want us to all be clones?

@ffenics @DreyfusJames If they only allow modern pc drag...it's bound to do well without competition. Give a choice and see how soon Ru Paul would look like a silly man who thinks he looks like a woman. Modern gays are such a disappointment...I don't know what ppl bothered to fight for.

@dtbangoskank @DreyfusJames Of course they can. What are you going on about? Thats like saying a straight couples can’t go and see a gay band because there are now more out gay bands! Many straight people like the current drag. You know how many millions RuPaul is making?

@dtbangoskank @DreyfusJames Same thing. Drag is drag. Because of the increase in drag performers, some you may like, some you may not. Thats no different to any performer. Do you like every music artist, every comedian, every stand up? No of course not. We all have preferences of what entertains us.

@InFearOfKeir @DreyfusJames As with all performance, vote with your feet, if it doesn’t make money it won’t continue. It just happens that the current phase of TV drag is very popular with a lot of people so it’s making a lot of money for those involved.

@InFearOfKeir @DreyfusJames There is so much more drag now than there was 30 years ago so of course its changed somewhat and because of that then I am sure there are some that you won’t like/agree with just like any performer. Thankfully none of us are forced to watch it against our will!
