Africa’s youth are not the future of conservation: they are its present. Yesterday marked the opening of the 3rd African Youth Summit on Biodiversity #AYSB2025, which convened more than 180 young delegates from across the continent. Addressed by key leaders from @AWF_Official, @IUCN, @UNESCO, @GYBNAfrica, and the Rwanda Youth Biodiversity Network, the summit set a powerful tone for youth-led action toward the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). Moderated sessions explored how African countries are updating their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) and the importance of regional collaboration through mechanisms like the EAC Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, a reminder that nature transcends borders, and so must our actions. As AWF’s Rwanda Country Lead, @nsapatric emphasized, Africa’s young people, who make up over 75% of the continent’s population, are the innovators and leaders driving the continent’s transformation. AWF remains committed to empowering youth with the skills, knowledge, and platforms to lead Africa’s conservation agenda and ensure that the GBF delivers real impact where it matters most: on the ground, in our landscapes, and for our people.
