The contrast between the breaking news from at least two “frontier” labs and the hype and bravado that we have seen over the last two years from @sama and @elonMusk and others is simply breathtaking. 𝘼𝙂𝙄 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙤𝙣.

Heard a leak from one of the frontier labs (not oai tbh), they reached an unexpected HUGE wall of diminishing returns trying to brute-force better results by training longer & using more and more data.. (more severe than what is published publicly)

we should all worry about this graph. academia has its problems but I have never seen anything like the current AI/ML monoculture. the movement from a peer-reviewed academic culture to a corporate, resource-intensive, hype-driven culture is likely partly responsible.

It's covered a bit in the above podcast by people like @katecrawford - there's huge implications to industrialization, mostly centering around who gets control of the frontier, when the frontier becomes resource intensive. So far control is accruing to the private sector (uh oh!)
