We have been saying this for years now. It's nearly impossible to come to the UK to work as a researcher, especially if you have a family. theguardian.com/education/arti…

In the immediate aftermath of the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, the Israeli state began an intense information warfare campaign with the intention to dehumanize Palestinians as a whole in order to justify the collective punishment of a population of 2.3 million people caged in a territory the size of Philadelphia. As part of this campaign, Israeli government and military officials, IDF soldiers, media outlets, and members of private Israeli rescue organizations told a series of graphic stories about what occurred on October 7. Several of the most shocking of these, including assertions of group executions of children and the mass beheading of babies, have now been debunked, including through the investigative reporting of major Israeli media outlets. Among this campaign’s ultimate successes was getting President Biden and other U.S. and international officials to launder and promote false narratives. This pattern has continued during the four month war against Gaza, with the U.S. giving cover to Israel to attack Gaza’s hospitals and bolstering the Israeli campaign to demonize and destroy UNRWA, the most vital aid organization on the ground in Gaza. I have watched many, many hours of footage from the October 7 attacks and it is harrowing and horrifying. There is no doubt that widespread atrocities and war crimes were committed during the Hamas-led attacks of October 7. The intentional killing of unarmed civilians, whether by Hamas or by the Israeli military, is a war crime. It is also a war crime to take civilians hostage. Among those taken captive by Hamas and other groups were children, including a 10-month old baby, and the elderly. It is also true that for decades Israel has repeatedly killed Palestinian civilians in both Gaza and the West Bank. And it maintains a longstanding policy of arresting and prosecuting Palestinian children and youth in military courts, often denying them basic rights. The Israeli social security agency has published extensive documentation on the identities of the 1,139 Israeli citizens and residents killed on October 7. According to these figures, 695 Israeli civilians were documented to have been killed that day, along with 71 foreigners, most of whom were migrant laborers. These people and the more than 27,000 Palestinians whose deaths were justified in their names, deserve an unvarnished rendering of the truth. The documentable facts are horrifying enough on their own. When deliberate falsehoods are inserted into the discourse and repeated by U.S. officials, it serves no purpose but to forward the agenda of Netanyahu’s war of annihilation. In this piece, I tried to offer an overview of how some false stories spread and the role these narratives have played in the horrors that have been meted out against the people of Gaza over the past four months. theintercept.com/2024/02/07/gaz…
