Max Hastings is one of very few modern historians to claim that the First World War was justified and that the Allies had to fight it to stop the expansion of German and Austro-Hungarian militarism and authoritarianism. I tend to think, like most historians, that it was a waste and could have been avoided through diplomatic means. For example, the Allies could have just let Austria have Serbia.

People - remember also if you sacrifice salary and make larger tax free pension payments, you are also saving on National Insurance contributions. You save and your employer saves on their bit. It’s your money, you earned it.
Major D Malpas@MajorDMalpas

Reduce your salary as much as you can and maximise what you put into your pension. You are allowed to put up to £60k tax free into your pension and when 55 you can take a 25% lump sum out and pay no tax on that. Don’t give them your money. It’s yours, you earned it.

@FifeOnMars @JamesCa75450050 @GlennGlennReal The rUK taxpayer? You're having a larf. Westminster borrowed £1.5 trillion 2010-2024 under the Tories. £20,000 for every man woman and child. Labour are trying to break the record. If rUK had to survive on the tax it paid it would be broke. Don't give us your Yoon shite.

Well done Scotland voting to give Swinney and his incompetent activists another 5 years on the gravy train. You do know that there will be NO independence? He’s duped you all. Scotland 5.5m people - Half the population are on some form of benefits, the rest that aren’t around 20-24% of that group are public sector workers paid for by the taxpayer. The private sector, the bit that actually generates the wealth is stagnant & diminishing, while benefit dependency and long-term sickness explode. @theSNP has run Scotland for nearly 20 years. Result? A structural deficit so huge the rest of the UK sends us £26 billion every year just to keep the lights on. Without that subsidy we’d be bankrupt. We are being run into the ground by people who think more spending, more welfare and more grievance equals progress. The numbers don’t lie. Scotland’s dependency culture is unsustainable and the SNP has zero credible plan to fix it

@JamesCa75450050 @FifeOnMars @GlennGlennReal Compared to rUK: More police, more GPs, more doctors, more nurses, more teachers, less poverty, more of our population in tertiary education, no tuition fees, free at point of use prescriptions, no hospital parking charges, no bridge tolls, lower council tax, drinkable water ...

A French resident born in Scotland pisses all over his homeland. Scotland like every developed country faces huge challenges: inequality, poverty, an aging society. But it is a rich, affluent, dynamic society filled with ideas & imagination. Below is Scotland of Neil's mind.

Andrew Neil: ‘Scotland is rudderless, increasingly shabby, living on memories of past glories while its cities and towns are gripped with an urban squalor unrivalled anywhere else in Western Europe’. Read more in today’s @MailOnlineScot 👇

Holyrood - A continuous clown show. Scotland deserves to decide if we want to continue with this devolution nonsense - put it to a vote and ask the question is Holyrood of benefit to the taxpayer? Let’s give councils actual control instead of more expensive centralised bureaucracy. Legally, Westminster can reverse Scottish devolution. Parliament is sovereign, it could repeal the Scotland Act and abolish Holyrood tomorrow. The permanence of devolution isn’t law - it’s symbolism.

IR35 destroyed the social mobility of a generation, there are many people who would have reached financial independence by now if not for IR35. The worst part about IR35 is you take on all the risks of self employment whilst receiving none of the benefits of full time employment. It's extremely unfair and should be repealed.

MK2 was pretty fun. Much better than the first. Johnny was a better protagonist, but the way they killed off Cole felt way too harsh and kind of a coward move instead of committing to the character and improving him. Glad Kano’s back tho cuz hes my fav lol.

Within months of a supposedly one-off 'decisive' ref in 2014 the SNP were lining up Trident renewal as an excuse for another go. Then it was Brexit, then a Johnson gov't... now this. The SNP have no respect for devolution, the constitution or democracy. This 👇is mere white noise

Wales is just starting on its nationalist nightmare whereas Scotland is seeing shoots of recovery to going back to being normal. This was a bad election for the SNP who would have been routed if Reform hadn’t split the vote. So it’s not doom & gloom. Pressure is on SNP.

One in six voters backed Reform largely because they believed other parties weren’t listening to them. If Swinney actually wanted to persuade those voters this is not what he’d do. But he doesn’t want to persuade those voters. He wants to encourage them. Because it helps the SNP.
