BIMODAL HIRING The hiring market is becoming bimodal. Companies want to hire either: Extremely experienced / strong / 10x engineers (eg: @bcherny) or growth marketers (eg: @ElenaVerna) or salespeople who use AI to refine their craft. OR Young people who are fearless and AImaxxed doers. In the middle is death. Esp if you're a spreadsheet jockey, as most middle managers are.

@Altimor Agree, we constantly do team offsites and company-wide offsites, but nothing beats the bandwidth of in-person information exchange. The agility just flourishes. If corporations stay remote, startups should go fully in-office to outcompete them.

Pains me to say this, but even I have changed my stance on remote. We tried hard, developed the best tooling allowed by the tech — and still, remote falls very short of colocation, especially for startups that are still pre-product market fit.

The past months, Stripe has launched Stripe Tax and Stripe Identity: both massive opportunities. This year, Adyen launched Planet, a tweak in the checkout flow (carbon offsetting). Also: Stripe now aggressively hiring in Europe, including from Adyen, in the Netherlands.
Gergely Orosz@GergelyOrosz

So interesting to see how Stripe and Adyen are faring: especially as they are different (engineering) cultures, and are on a collision course. In 2020, Stripe had several self-reported product launches. Adyen: no new product launches. A striking difference. Coincidence?

@artman Such a hedge would assume most people are well trained in the dynamics between equity and cash and have chosen the latter to reduce perceived risk. But getting significant equity in Europe is still a novel thing

European engs & designers, what are your thoughts on equity? I’ve been getting the feeling that it’s really not well understood or even appreciated, which is one of the biggest differences to the U.S (where equity is the most important aspect of compensation). Proof me wrong.

@webflow At @Fonoa_HQ we had two WP sites and a custom one - it was such a pain to work with. We spent so much time and money until we switched to Webflow. More startups should start with Webflow immediately. @webflow how do we tell our story so others can learn from it?

@sudhirj Yes, but not at the speed we would like to see. There were some promising initiatives on the remittance front recently in the EU (MOSS/OSS) for example, but still far from a completely automated experience.

@FilipSturman Thanks. And do you see a path towards automating account creating and remittance as well? Or will that remain manual work the foreseeable future?

@FilipSturman Do any/many of the tax authorities that you've seen offer an API to set up accounts and report invoices? Or does each country still need to be reported to individually?

I was looking for a way to sell access to private GitHub repository for an upcoming course I'm building, but couldn't find anything that just used Stripe itself. So I built it! 🤩 Introducing repopaywall.vercel.app Hosted on @vercel, powered by @stripe

@notrab @vercel @stripe @PaddleHQ @gumroad Both of the ones I mentioned cover you in the EU, without having to think about it. Paddle AFAIK also covers the US sales taxes, which are mandatory at certain volumes Stripe unfortunately does not do anything to help here and far too many solopreneurs are out of compliance :-(

@GergelyOrosz Stripe's ability to ship at this level is astonishing. Democratizing product decision-making really does scale well. I wonder what are the advantages of a centralized command and control model these days anyway? Cost perhaps, but short term.

This is the model most EU companies have operated with for a long-long time. What makes this interesting is how Adyen going head-to-head with the likes of Stripe. Where every engineer/PM has major ownership. They feel empowered to innovate - and have a (lot) of skin in the game.
