I just paid €4.80, like a proper fool, for an almond croissant from The Art of Coffee, a perfectly pleasant but fairly run of the mill café chain where their pain au chocolat is, more often than not, stale. Now, this croissant is large and stuffed with filling, but nearly a fiver for a pastry is simply too much. Yet this is how we're going. I could have said no thanks and walked out when the server told me the price, but you know when someone insults you and you freeze, and it takes you a minute to react? That, except with pastry.

Cork Fire Brigade has been ordered to pay €8k in compensation to Terézia Foott, aged in her 40s who failed to advance. She was held to the same standard as the man in his 20s who completed the beep test alongside her on the day.

Also after 12pm on the show: We received an email from someone who said the story in the news yesterday, where a woman in her 40s won a discrimination case because she was expected to pass the same “beep test” (a standard fitness test for firefighters) as men and younger candidates for a firefighter job and shows we are going “woke” and not acknowledging that some jobs are just better suited to men and some to women.
She said these gender equality programmes are setting young girls up to fail. She also said, to be honest, if there was a fire and you were in danger, who would you like to see coming to help you, a 6 foot man or a 5 foot woman?
Is she right, and are we misleading young women by telling them they can do everything a man can do by making entry tests easier?
