I used to casually watch "Adam Ruins Everything" until he did an episode about something that I actually knew about and it turned out that he was wrong about almost everything that we were allegedly wrong about.
@thebluetruther@vikare06 Those probably wouldn't be powerful to light a giant set. In the story of the original setup, they went and arranged the lights from the LA Public Works... Actual street lamps.
My favorite lost tech in cinema is masking via sodium vapor process.
This was used in place of blue screens and it generate a perfect mask. They stopped in the 80s because they didn't know how to make the prism correctly.
Today it's alien technology
@thebluetruther@vikare06 You got to remember that the guy that invented the Sodium Vapor process (Petro Vlahos) went on to perfect blue screen and then started Ultimatte for analog / digital video.
@thebluetruther@vikare06 I did something similar to Mary Poppins with a Canon C200 on an ad for a college play... Less than ideal lighting. With 4K, it's gotten quite easy actually.
@thebluetruther@vikare06 They're really good no doubt... But you can achieve just as good with everyday digital tools today without having to source a sodium vapor street lamp.
@vikare06@thebluetruther I'll bite... There's big issues with sodium vapor that have been solved with other processes... One is you can't stand on it. Notice in Poppins how the floor had to be constructed in every shot. As cool as it is, the process was supplanted by superior tech even before digital
