It is clear the PPS have been erroneously applying the law to cases in which Director’s consent is required. The prosecution of David Stitt for comments which were objectively entirely reasonable was always a gross abuse of prosecutorial power for political purposes. There has to be really serious questions about the PPS using prosecutorial power to prosecute a very overt political agenda and bias. It is no surprise that inevitably politically motivated cases fall apart. It is further understood that the arrest of Mr Stitt came following the Secretary of State urging such actions upon the DPP and PSNI. The extent of this political interference will be further explored in the time ahead. David Stitt said: “I am proud to have fought this matter all the way to the Court of Appeal, and won. “The prosecution was always politically motivated and an abuse of the law. The Court of Appeal has affirmed the contention that the case was never lawfully initiated. “Free speech is a fundamental part of the very foundation of the United Kingdom. This prosecution sought to stymie that and shut down discussion of some very important issues. “I want to thank all those who have assisted me throughout this case, in particular Gavin Booth and all at Phoenix Law, Jamie Bryson LL.B, Lara Wallace-Thorp BL and John Larkin KC. “Finally I want to express my gratitude to my family who had to endure all the abuse and harassment that flows from this unlawful case brought against me. I look forward to celebrating with my family and getting on with my life after this unjust, and ultimately failed, persecution.”
