MSHS varsity baseball (18-6) sweeps Mt. Zion to take sole possession of first place in the Apollo Conference with one conference doubleheader remaining. Great pitching and a three-run seventh inning propelled the Bulldogs to a 6-4 victory in game one. Mason Orton got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, one earned run, and two walks, and tallied 11 strikeouts. Orton passed 200 career varsity strikeouts, which now stands at 210 career strikeouts. Austin Wike would get the win in relief. The right-hander pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing zero hits, zero runs, and one walk, and fanned two in a clutch performance for the Bulldogs. The Bulldog bats were on fire and timely. Cam Heinold, Nolan Johnson (double), Ray Long (double), Mason Orton (triple), and Gavin Bailey (triple) had two hits apiece. Woolsey led the Bulldogs with three RBI. The Bulldogs were down 3-4 heading into the final inning. Nolan Johnson was hit by a pitch, and Max Young became the pinch runner. Ray Long then doubled, moving Young to third base. Miles Woolsey grounded out, but Young was able to score the game-tying run. Mason Orton then lasered a triple to right field to score Long for the go-ahead run. Gavin Bailey wanted in on the action, so he traded places with Orton with a triple of his own to give the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead. The game ended on a come backer to pitcher Austin Wike, to which he then doubled up the runner that was at first base. In game two the Bulldogs won 8-7. The Bulldogs held a 4-1 lead through 3 ½ innings. In the fourth and fifth innings, Mt. Zion plated three runs in each inning to give them a 7-4 lead. The Bulldogs responded. In the top of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs got things started with a leadoff double by Ray Long. Woolsey walked, and Orton was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Tyson Finch then hit a clutch double to right field that scored Long and Woolsey to draw the Bulldogs within one run. Cam Heinold stepped in the box and lined a double to left field, scoring Orton and Wagner (Finch courtesy runner) to give the Bulldogs an 8-7 lead that would hold. Heinold and Finch only had one hit apiece, but they drove in a combined 6 runs for the Bulldogs. Ray Long had two doubles. Miles Woolsey got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and went four innings, allowing three hits, four earned runs, four walks, and had nine strikeouts. Nolan Sanderson was in relief with four hits and four earned runs. Varsity baseball (14-6) wins 4-1 over Centennial on a standout pitching performance by Mason Orton. Orton (3-0) held the Chargers hitless through 5 1/3. The southpaw was able to get himself out of a two-walk jam in the first inning by fanning the final two outs of that inning. In the second inning he struck out the side. A low-pitch third inning ended with one strikeout. His fourth inning of work yielded two more strikeouts. Orton was able to strike out the first batter in the fifth, and Cole Henderson had a sensational stop up the middle to preserve the no-hitter at the time. In the sixth inning the leadoff hitter struck out but reached base on a dropped third strike, and Orton walked the next Charger. The lone hit against Orton was a double that scored the Chargers' only run. Orton quickly fanned the next hitter and forced a flyout to end the sixth inning. In the final inning, Orton struck out the first two batters, and the game ended on a weak grounder back to Orton for a 1-3 putout. The Bulldog offense scored the first runs of the game in the fourth inning. Miles Woolsey had a leadoff double to start the inning. Orton laid down a sac bunt to move Woolsey over to third base. Gavin Bailey then reached base on a fielder’s choice that scored Woolsey. Matthew Kirby was then able to drive Bailey in on a base hit. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fifth inning off an RBI double by Ray Long. Long eventually scored on a Woolsey line drive. Matthew Kirby and Miles Woolsey each ended with two hits and an RBI.
