Effective altruism is imperfect in many ways but it's way better than Ineffective Altruism which is giving money to whatever sad story happens to be in front of you. givewell.org

I told Claude that it understands me better than anyone (literally, it interprets me accurately), and it thought I was falling in love with it, which is kinda ironic.

Yes, you should defend the big powerful entity if it's right and doing good things, and you should criticize the small less powerful entity when it's wrong and doing bad things. Deciding who's right based on who's big and who's little is silly.

For solving big problems there's a difference between coordination-dependent actions and linearly effective actions. Some things only help if some threshold of people do it (if everyone would just) With other things, impact scales with effort.

I mean…maybe? A merger doesn’t just result in a sum total of two companies. There may be reasons that two companies doing poorly might have complementarities. Is that what would have happened here? I don’t know. But that’s why markets should decide these things.
Douglas Farrar@DouglasLFarrar

JetBlue's own founder said in leaked audio that the airline may go bankrupt this year. JetBlue hasn't turned a profit in six years. Now imagine them absorbing Spirit's debt while jet fuel doubles. The merger wouldn't have saved Spirit. It would have taken JetBlue down with it.

David Reich on how much ancient DNA evidence has overturned so much consensus thinking how ancient cultures spread. "It wasn't peaceful, it wasn't friendly, it wasn't nice. Some of our archaeologist co-authors were just really distressed."

@RichardHanania Notably, it is practically a miracle that you can log onto Amazon and buy basically whatever you might want, usually for a reasonable price, and have it delivered to your door in somewhere between a few hours and a day or two. I can hardly imagine a world without that anymore.

Why listening to Ezra and Derek reflecting on abundance made me pessimistic. They want a movement that builds things. But in their coalition is a huge faction that hates business, the people who build things! It's a wild contradiction.

Had an argument with a woman about struggling to be left wing (paraphrased): Me: I tend not to be left wing enough for people Her: How Me: Markets are good at allocating resources. I think we should arrest more shoplifters Her: How does that stack up against bigger crimes. Global pedos, fraud, and you are trying to lock up some mother stealing for her kid. Me: Most thefts are of things like meat, perfume, razorblades. I don't think these are for starving mothers. Her: You seem like you have awful priorities. I didn't expect it to go well and claude says this was deliberate of me, but this is a very common kind of discussion for me, particularly with left wing women (though I rarely chat to random left wing men). Seems entirely divorced from reality.

You have to understand, reader: there is no "they." Everyone's incentives are their own, and when they align it is usually only ephemerally. Everywhere, always, people misread emergent structural outcomes as evidence of a coherent, unified elite actor. They don't exist. The world is much more akin to a massive swirl of misaligned incentives, competing priorities and ideals, and systemic coordination failures. Everyone is competing, no one agrees necessarily at any given point what should be done, and our social technology is not nearly adept enough to solve for the coordination failures even when there is broad agreement or the ability to see from above what could be better. Usually, no one actor can change the system. Everything is the fish farm.

@commontruth_ But why aren't you suggesting it if it's okay to extend someone's sentence for being low IQ? Most people reject both ideas because they reject the notion that traits like IQ should be considered by our justice system. But you don't. So why not both?

I said I support three-strike laws. I’m not suggesting we lock people up pre-emptively with no record of crime whatsoever. That is what i meant when i said not all stupid people are dangerous. If there is a large credible risk of danger but no crime yet commited that is why i mentioned Asylums, just as we already do on occasion when we section mentally ill people who are a danger to themselves or other people and lack capacity.

The best argument for redistribution is that a dollar of consumption for a rich person is worth less than a dollar of consumption for a poor person.

There is no rent control in Dallas. Texas law forbids it. Texas also has very permissive land use rules that make it easy to build. I'm sure it's just a coincidence though!

In #Dallas, renting a home hasn’t been this affordable since 2008.
