In 2008, Carlos Ramirez was playing around in Microsoft Paint when he sketched a strange, minimalist face inspired by how pointless and hollow many 4chan comments seemed. That offhand drawing went on to become Trollface, one of the most iconic internet memes ever.

The Trollface meme was created by 19-year-old Carlos Ramirez on September 19, 2008, drawn in MS Paint as part of a comic he posted on 4chan joking about trolling “for the lulz.” It spread so fast users cropped it into its own symbol, and Ramirez later copyrighted it and won payouts from companies that used it without permission.
