In childhood we are always looking for "other kids to play with". How come when we become adults we are far more interested in fighting with each other?

According to the extraordinary @FionaMurden; watching sport is exciting, engaging, visceral. Watching sport is key to learning and performance, improving our own capability. Sport brings together observing, learning and doing.

Ancient wisdom understood what modern life keeps trying to erase. Fulfilment doesn’t come from climbing higher. It comes from our ability to connect. Not a feel-good slogan. Just the most powerful force we’ve got. Full article here: open.substack.com/pub/fionamurde…

@sbkaufman Totally agree on taking responsibility where we can. Psychologically, autonomy is key to motivation but when someone’s in survival mode, even small choices can feel out of reach. It’s not either/or. Empowerment starts with understanding what’s blocking agency in the first place.

Actually my view is that you CAN be lazy and unmotivated. You can be stuck in survival mode AND also lazy. I try to empower people to take responsibility for what they can change and take concrete actions to have a better life and not blame everything on others and the world.
Dr. Gabriel Barsawme, LSW@GBarsawme

You’re not lazy. You’re not unmotivated. You’re stuck in survival mode and your body put you there. One of the most cited cognitive scientists alive - Scott Barry Kaufman - says your potential didn’t disappear. It just got blocked by unmet needs. Here’s how to access it again 🧵

@sbkaufman Yup - unless people feel a responsibility for their own life they are just being pushed about by every external force. And they of course are unrelenting putting people in a pretty unhealthy position to say the least!

What in the world is up with this trend to start every personal development thread these days with "You're not lazy". Why do all these threads adopt the strategy of absolving people of all responsibility for their own life?

The most advanced technology in your life isn’t your phone. It’s YOU. But we weren’t given a user manual. So we keep searching for the next wellness app. We’re built like Ferraris, but most of us are stuck in first gear, with no idea where the clutch is.

As the amazing @FionaMurden shares in her book, Mirror Thinking, simply having an adult who is not a parent or relative show interest and belief in a young person is often enough to help send them on a more positive trajectory through life...

The best way to improve your writing is not always to write more. It's often to read more. Instead of just enjoying the content, study the form. Pay attention to how they set up ideas, structure paragraphs, signpost transitions, and shape sentences. Role models elevate art.

@sbkaufman @CeliaHardy20 I love the first line. It’s so critical as a first step to really fulfilling potential and something too many slip into ie ‘victim mindset’ without even realising. Look forward to reading 😊!

@benryanwriter @sbkaufman I’ve spent my career working with senior leaders - and in that domain I’d say it’s in part because other skills (ie social and emotional) are far harder to quantify. For most it’s easier to rely on what we can quantify - but also to dislike what we can’t measure up to.

@sbkaufman Presumably because of standardized testing and its ties to college admissions and its ties to getting ahead in life. The same cannot be said about those other personal qualities. There is a lot at stake!

Why do people hate the notion of intelligence so much? No one has intense opinions about whether extraversion or conscientiousness or neuroticism influences our lives, but god forbid you say that high intelligence matters. (FWIW, I don't equate IQ with intelligence.)

@sbkaufman I would guess people hate it because it’s something that culture values and something that they feel judged against throughout life. Most often in a way that is not actually representative of what the full spectrum of intelligence represents.

@MattSeedorff We know someone who has lost their home. It feels unreal. It’s all happened so quickly. I just hope that everyone stays safe - including the incredible firefighters and pilots trying to stop the spread.
