I’m thrilled that Obsession and Backrooms are drawing huge audiences. Incredible films. Well-deserved. But I can’t buy into ‘the blockbuster summer movie as we’ve known it being dead’ when Toy Story 5, Minions 3, Moana, and Spider-Man: BND are on deck, for better or worse.

The blockbuster summer movie as we know it is dead. RIP IP. The most talked about movies of the summer are two low budget indie films—OBSESSION and BACKROOMS. Not sequels. Not spinoffs. Not reboots. OGs. Movies are back, baby. This is the way.

The big secret is that you need to make good horror movies that audiences will actually want to see, talk about, spread the word about, and go see again. It's not easy. Not easy at all. But that's the ONLY lesson to learn from the success of movies like Obsession and Backrooms.

‘BACKROOMS’ is tracking to break these records this weekend. • One of the top 5 biggest openings for a horror film ever • Biggest opening weekend ever for an A24 film • Kane Parsons (20) will be the youngest director of all time to have a #1 film on its opening weekend

Season 4 has glaring flaws, we all can agree, but it's not “terrible.” I found the Duffer's writing, predominantly for that season, to be some of the best since S1. An aspect I wished had carried over to S5, but unfortunately, it did not.

How could someone watch The Drama and come out at the end of it pondering, “Who are Charlie and Emma beyond the realm of this story?”

@tylekurner The Drama is literally about the situation they're in being effected by the circumstance in her past. It shows a ton of their lives. They absolutely exist outside of the circumstances. You feel the history between them and the lived in world around them.

One thing I picked up from Ryan Coogler—which he picked up from someone else— is that movies are, in all, the most important moment in someone's life. Most of the films listed here already give you the sense of who these characters are. You wanna watch a character life unfold-
tylekurner@tylekurner

something i've noticed about THE DRAMA, OBSESSION, BLUE FILM, EXIT 8, HOKUM, ERUPCJA, & UNDERTONE is a relative incuriosity about characters' lives beyond exposition. very hermetic, these people don't seem to exist outside of the immediate circumstances of the movie they're in.
