Former First Lady Monica Geingos will be awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Johannesburg on March 16 in recognition of her contributions to public health advocacy, gender justice, and social reform. The university's Senate and Council had approved the conferral of an honorary doctoral degree. The Faculty of Health Sciences has nominated her for an honorary doctorate, recognising her significant achievements and the positive impact she has had on society. Geingos has been persistent and a prominent voice on issues affecting women, young people and vulnerable communities. Through the One Economy Foundation, she has led initiatives focused on youth empowerment, access to sexual and reproductive health information, and addressing structural inequality. One of her flagship interventions has been the BeFree Campus, a youth-friendly center that provides health services, mental health support, career guidance, and safe spaces for dialogue. The programme has reached thousands of young people with information on HIV prevention, contraception, gender-based violence and personal development. Geingos has also engaged directly with survivors of gender-based violence and has taken the step of working with convicted offenders. She has supported rehabilitation dialogue aimed at confronting harmful masculinity, accountability, and behavioural change among men convicted of GBV-related crimes. Her approach has focused on prevention, restorative engagement, and breaking violent cycles. Emil Xamro Seibeb #NBCNews #nbcdigitalnews #nbcDSTV282 #nbcGOtv20 #nbcplusapp
