Convention on Migratory Species (CMS)
Billions of aquatic, avian, and terrestrial wild animals migrate across lands, rivers, oceans and skies. They are essential to the well-functioning of nature and to human well-being as they pollinate plants, transport nutrients, regulate ecosystems, control pests, store carbon and sustain livelihoods and cultures worldwide. 🐦 But many of these species are not doing well. Our new State of the World’s Migratory Species: Interim Report 2026 has found that a number of species that previously had stable populations are decreasing. 26 CMS-listed species, including 18 migratory shorebirds have moved to higher extinction risk categories, for example. 🔎 Recovery is possible but the world needs to act now. Dive into our #SWMS26 report, available in English, Spanish and French: cms.int/publication/st…

A 6-month closure, if set during the appropriate period, would cover the vast majority of migrating glass and silver eels and provide a higher level of protection of the eel stock in waters covered by the closure.” @EU_MARE, 2023. That is not what we see: fishsec.org/2025/12/13/too…

Oceana in Europe

📢 New Oceana DNA study: 77% of fish samples analysed in Brussels restaurants and EU institutions canteens was mislabelled. Basic information such as species or origin was unavailable or incorrect leaving consumers in the dark about what they eat. ➡️europe.oceana.org/press-releases…

Roll-over of provisions for the annual #eel fishing closures, to be adopted at the #AGRIFISH_Council this week, is full of holes and in breach of CFP objectives on sustainable fishing. @EU_MARE proposal bare minimum. Take further action for eel recovery: fishsec.org/2025/12/10/eus…

Instead of listing all 17 anguillid eel species under Appendix II, CITES COP20 adopted a resolution to strengthen existing measures to control trade in eels. To read more about the decisions: fishsec.org/2025/12/05/pro…

While the proposal to better control global trade in eels was rejected, other marine species will have better protection after @CITES Summit moves manta rays and whale shark to Appendix I, as well as listing new species of sharks and a sea cucumber: cites.org/eng/cop20

Today, for 2026 @ICES repeats the zero catch advice for #European_eel for all life stages, all uses and in all habitats. Anthropogenic mortalities should be zero and habitats restored. Contrary to scientific advice, exploitation of > 2,000 t continues: ices-library.figshare.com/articles/repor…
