At 4:02 this morning I stopped at a gas station. I was going to work. I was not the first person there. This bothered me. I had been awake for 30 minutes and had already decided I was doing something impressive…. I wasn’t. The man ahead of me was wearing work boots that suggested he had been awake since Tuesday. He bought two energy drinks and a breakfast sandwich. The woman behind him wore scrubs. She bought nothing but coffee. Nobody spoke. This is the etiquette of a gas station before sunrise. Someone in a reflective vest was standing at the counter eating a breakfast sandwich. Nobody looked tired. I looked tired enough for all of us. I slowly remembered that I was not early. At 4:00 in the morning, the gas station has its own population. Roofers. Nurses. Factory workers. Truck drivers. Men wearing clothes designed entirely around being visible in darkness. Nobody asks what you do. Your pants have already explained it. I bought a drink. The cashier told me to have a good day while theres was about to end. Outside, a delivery truck was unloading. The factory across the road was lit from end to end. Another truck pulled in. Then another. Most people think nothing happens at this hour. That is because most people are asleep while it happens. People finish entire shifts at jobs the rest of us have not woken up early enough to remember exist. America was already open. By sunrise, most of the work will already be done. Then the roads fill. And people complain that everyone is finally going to work. I’m back in my car now. It’s still completely dark. I left home feeling like I was up early. Now I feel like I’m running late.
