@FixMallory @Philadeliberty @PHLCouncil Yes, it’s completely appropriate for charter school families to make it clear to the mayor that they want charter renewals to be a priority, and for her to pass that along. That’s exactly what local control is. The same avenue of influence could also be used for other things.

I think they're right an elected board makes it less likely a muscular mayor can disrupt the status quo @PHLCouncil thrives on. But that also means we get stuck with the status quo of public schools in Philadelphia...

@FixMallory @Philadeliberty @PHLCouncil Possibly this mayor’s style is more assertive. I don’t think she is calling the board up on a regular basis, but she appears to have made some things clear. When there is a charter renewal vote, for example, board members talk out loud about the mayor’s position on charters.

The money that would buy your “elected school board seats”…. elected just a euphemism for bought

Mayors have vision but are not dictating or giving “advice.” I know this is hard for Philly to understand… but this current system actually lets for independent thinking that isn’t beholden to politics. How do I know? I was on board for 6 years.

@Philadeliberty @PHLCouncil The school board takes advice from the mayor. If she had any great status quo disruptions in mind for schools, she could get it done with a phone call.

@PhillyGov Why didn’t change? Bc others resigned. How many honeslty competitive elections have we had in ten years? If we had competitive elections , I could maybe support an elected board. We don’t.

Only makes a little sense if elected board can set the property tax rate for their portion like every other school board. I doubt taxing power is on the table given council doesn’t give up power.

@MeganRSmith83 @jongeeting the funniest part about this to me is how the resolution was “privileged.” Isn’t their complaint against BOE saying it wasn’t transparent in process? Seems hypocritical to me.

An elected board is a bad idea for so many reasons- like special interests buying seats and also distracting board members from the work bc they have to go campaign and play favors to keep their seats….. But you do know why we don’t have an elected school board for real, right?

@AndyKaplin @Mastrangelo___ @PHLCouncil But we need to make sure teachers and staff are fully supported to reach high levels of success- that’s not what is happening due to being underfunded by the $1B a year determined by FF Trial. Hard to be successful when you’re constantly being pulled to cover classes etc

@FixMallory @Mastrangelo___ @PHLCouncil No. There’s no point. These are all rhetorical questions. Until the teachers union lets bad teachers and principals get fired for their test results, or we stop social promotions of failing students, we will be stuck in a perpetual system of failure.

When will City Council hold a hearing about reading,writing,and arithmetic results in the School district? Why do we accept that only 29% of 4th graders read a grade level. Why does @PHLCouncil always worry about the wrong things. They want us to pay more but not focus on results

I am a teacher in a teachers union… and yet I agree- there are bad teachers that need held accountable. (Also bad administrators). Accountability and hug expectations needs to happen all around

@AndyKaplin @Mastrangelo___ @PHLCouncil A hearing isn’t the right mechanism- yes, they should have them. But that’s basically all there is- it’s always a firing squad , not a “thought partner” in a productive way publicly. SDP calls themselves out on this data pretty candidly- did you ever attend?

@Mastrangelo___ @PHLCouncil Mike. Read the whole post. It says they always focus on stupid stuff. I obviously know they won’t hold hearings. Follow along and you can see how much I think they waste our money and time and then ask me for an election contribution

@AndyKaplin @PHLCouncil The district (Board) holds monthly public meetings monitoring academic progress on just this…. it would be a huge asset if council came out, attended, engaged in the data, and then helped problem solve it together in the Council Ed Committee meetings.

@mr_saltz @CaralhoPhilly Agree the product needs to be desirable- for sure. But are you saying that as population trends change, schools shouldn’t adjust? People are literally having less kids and /or living in dif places, going to charters without even considering product of SDP schools, etc

@CaralhoPhilly We build one bedroom apartments because we assume people will move after the suburbs. Close schools because we assume nobody will ever dream of going to them. The people who run this don't believe in the product and it shows

Some really smart observations here, I definitely missed them in the heat of the moment. Two objections: first, there are some council people who parachuted in for a photo op, and there were some who have been fighting for months. I do think that matters.

@CaralhoPhilly @mr_saltz I’ve literally heard council people say charters are needed bc they are economic engines for small businesses- educating kids as they primary purpose of a school is rarely discussed.

@mr_saltz Also, sorry too many thoughts at once, the charter system is such a scam that only serves to get the owners rich

looking for ideas/stuff to buy for a 7 hour flight for my 3.5 year old. we don’t do tablets but would be OK with buying headphones for movie watching if anyone has recs for ones that plug in
