I matched with a guy on Hinge who kept replying weirdly fast. Like… instantly. No matter what time I texted. One night I joked, “do you even sleep?” He said, “not really.” Then he accidentally sent a screenshot… and my chat was pinned under a folder called “active cases.” I laughed and said “wtf is that supposed to mean?” He unsent the screenshot immediately. Then stopped replying for two days.
When he finally texted again all he said was: “you should really close your curtains at night.” I stared at that message for like five straight minutes. Because my curtains were open. I checked the window so fast I almost dropped my phone. Couldn’t see anyone outside. Just darkness. I blocked him immediately. The next morning I woke up to a “follow requested” notification from a blank account. No posts. No profile picture. Just one bio line: “Blocking me was kinda rude.”
I never accepted the request. But a week later my Uber driver turned around and said, “Hey… you finally closed the curtains.”

Authors deserve compensation, yes but I promise, the reason Harry Potter became so popular is not because everyone can afford the premium price. I do not believe the incentive to create requires monopoly, what it requires is adequate compensation. And adequate compensation, as the history of literature repeatedly demonstrates, is compatible with wide, inexpensive, even free dissemination.
In African markets where no distribution infrastructure exists, no licensed ebook is available, and the novel by an African author is priced for a Western market, the author's royalty is a fraction of the cover price. The publisher captures most of the monopoly rent. When that novel goes out of print or simply unavailable in African markets, which is a common situation for texts that do not enjoy the distribution infrastructure of a major Western release, the author earns nothing from African readers in any case. The choice, for those readers, in my opinion, is not between a purchased copy that rewards the author and a free copy that does not. It is mostly a choice of reading or not reading. I'd like to assume most authors will have more interest in being read.

If you knew what goes into the process of creating a book, you'd understand how evil a thing piracy is. No person who truly loves and appreciates literature will condone piracy.
