I get where you're coming from, and I agree that Reagan-era neoliberal policies played a major role in exacerbating economic inequality and long-term fiscal instability. The massive tax cuts of the 1980s, combined with increased military spending, started the trajectory of unsustainable deficits. However, returning to pre-Reagan tax rates alone will not be enough to fix the looming debt crisis. 1. The Scale of the Problem Is Too Big for Just Tax Increases In 2023, federal spending was about $6.1 trillion, while revenue was around $4.4 trillion, leaving a $1.7 trillion deficit (and rising). Restoring pre-Reagan tax rates (top marginal rate of 70%) could increase revenue, but not nearly enough to bridge that gap. Even if we taxed all billionaires at 100%, it would fund the government for only a few months. Meanwhile, we are adding $3 billion in debt interest per day...over $1.1 trillion per year...which compounds the problem. 2. Entitlement Spending Is the Biggest Driver of Future Debt Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid now account for over 50% of federal spending and will only grow as Boomers retire. Even with tax increases, these programs are on an unsustainable trajectory because the worker-to-beneficiary ratio is shrinking. In 1960, there were 5.1 workers per Social Security beneficiary Today, it’s 2.8 workers per beneficiary By 2040, it will be 2.3 workers per beneficiary Unless we address this structural imbalance, no amount of taxation will close the gap. 3. The U.S. Economy Has Fundamentally Changed The 1950s-1970s "golden era" of middle-class prosperity was driven by high domestic manufacturing employment, union power, and industrial policy. The modern global economy does not function the same way due to: --Automation reducing demand for blue-collar labor --Outsourcing to low-wage economies (China, India, Mexico, etc.) --A declining birth rate leading to a labor shortage in critical trades Even if we raised taxes, rebuilding the middle class requires massive investment in vocational training, education reform, and strategic reshoring of key industries—not just a tax policy change. 4. Generational Wealth Taxation Won't Solve the Immediate Fiscal Crisis I don’t disagree that closing loopholes and taxing wealth properly would help curb inequality, but that doesn’t fix the immediate problem. The government needs revenue now, not just over decades from estate taxes or wealth redistribution. Without addressing the real-time fiscal trajectory, the debt burden will spiral out of control before generational wealth taxes even make an impact. 5. The Only Way to "Fix" This Is a Combination of Painful Solutions The reality is that there is no single silver bullet. Any real solution requires: --Raising taxes (yes, but not just on the ultra-wealthy...middle-class tax hikes will be unavoidable) --Restructuring entitlement programs, such as social security, etc (not necessarily cutting entirely, but increasing eligibility age, means-testing, etc.) --Controlling government spending (military and wasteful subsidies must be on the table) --Addressing labor shortages and productivity issues (through education, skilled immigration, and trade policies) Taxing the rich more might be necessary but nowhere near sufficient to prevent economic collapse. The real question is not just how much we tax, but also how we reform spending and restructure the workforce. If we don’t face the reality that both sides of the equation must be addressed, then we are just wasting time for the hell of it.

We don't have a rooster, and I've been wondering why I haven't seen a hawk take any of our chickens... anyways, we have a family of ravens living in the oak trees looking over the bottom pasture. A couple of weeks ago, the wife watched a hawk try to take a chicken, only to be attacked and chased off by the ravens. The ravens have some sort of arrangement with the chickens and will even attack my drone if it gets too close.

My rooster died in glorious single combat at the door of the coop, protecting the flock from a red tailed hawk. He was a noisy pain in the ass, but his did us all proud in the end.

I just reviewed news on the word "USAID". It is all stories about how horrible it is that Trump and Elon shut it down. There are ZERO stories about the crazy items that USAID was spending money on. They are trying to create a fake narrative to that USAID was an awesome agency and Trump is horrible for stopping the flow of money.
