Common sophistry tactic. When people say things like this they mean it increases the likelihood of influence in a certain direction. And it can be in any direction; sports, music, cars, philosophy, ideology, behaviors, etc... No one is claiming it will 100% make someone do something in particular. Just increase the likelihood. Good try though. You're probably just projecting how your parents treated you. Which is not cool.
