In honor of New Years, I'm counting down my 12 scholarly products released in the past 2 years, usually w/ help from colleagues & students, oldest to newest. 1st up is our finding that more education freedom is correlated with higher NAEP score gains. dx.doi.org/10.1080/155821…

If you can manage the paywall, you'll get to read me saying: “Support for private #SchoolChoice & become a litmus test for Republican politicians, & opposition to school choice has become a litmus test for Democratic politicians,” Patrick Wolf, a University of Arkansas professor who studies voucher programs, said. “Gov. Josh Shapiro sort of bucks that trend because he has expressed support for private school choice in the past, and so there's speculation that he may opt Pennsylvania into this program.” post-gazette.com/news/education…

Please read this outstanding story by @KevinMahnken about our recent NAEP study: “By definition, there will always be a gap between the students performing at the 90th percentile and students performing at the 10th percentile,” [Wolf] acknowledged. “But we don’t want it to be wide, and we don’t want it to be getting wider.” @mistygallo2 @ua_edreform @uacoehp @UArkansas @LarsonPR @garylarson07 @alexanderrusso @DeAngelisCorey @MichaelPetrilli @tomloveless99 @rickhess99 @ProfMartyWest @NaomiSRiley @shakamitchell @Dyrnwyn @The74 the74million.org/article/the-90…

Raising the Floor: Early Evidence Suggests Arkansas' Salary Increases Improved Teacher Retention @jbmcgee + @gema_zamarro In 2023, Arkansas enacted one of the most ambitious teacher pay reforms in the country. The LEARNS Act raised the statewide minimum teacher salary from $36,000 to $50,000, guaranteed at least a $2,000 raise for all teachers, and provided districts greater flexibility in structuring compensation. oep.uark.edu/raising-the-fl…

Another gem from @vincebielski begins with "Half a century after the book “Why Johnny Can’t Read” sounded an alarm about the rise of illiteracy in the U.S., it has only gotten worse: A quarter of all young adults, many of them high school graduates, are now functionally illiterate. Unable to read more than basic, short sentences, their prospects in today’s information economy are bleak." Wow! @karenvaites @hpatrinos realclearinvestigations.com/articles/2026/…
