The physics on this are worth running because "thousands of feet" sounds terrifying until you remember that height stops mattering after a few seconds.
An M&M weighs about 0.9 grams. Terminal velocity is determined by the ratio of mass to cross-sectional area. For something that light and that round, terminal velocity lands somewhere around 10 to 15 mph. A raindrop hits you harder.

We would not do that, because it violates the constitution. Also, I cannot overstate how much the DoW has been extremely aligned on this point. However, maybe this is the question you are really asking: what would we do if there were a constitutional amendment that made it legal? Maybe I would quit my job. I very deeply believe in the democratic process, and that our elected leaders have the power, and that we all have to uphold the constitution. I am terrified of a world where AI companies act like they have more power than the government. I would also be terrified of a world where our government decided mass domestic surveillance was ok. I don't know how I'd come to work every day if that were the state of the country/Constitution.

Maybe it's the conspiracy-minded me speaking but, the more I think about it, the more I suspect there is a good chance this is a psyop.
I mean, think about it: why on earth would the Pentagon make such a big deal of showing that they're trying to force AI companies to build autonomous AI killing machines and spy on citizens?
It makes sense if the point was never about getting Anthropic to comply, but about positioning them as heroically resisting. It's excellent publicity for Anthropic and the U.S. AI sector in the process... Now all the newspapers around the world are running the story "American AI company Anthropic defies its own military to defend ethical AI and protect humanity."
The Pentagon itself doesn't really care about looking like deranged warmongers, heck it's the way they probably want to be perceived anyhow.
And in any case, even if it isn't and the Pentagon genuinely wants to showcase that it's trying to make its AI sector part and parcel of the military-industrial complex, the end result is probably the same:
1) Also great publicity for Anthropic
2) nobody is going to kill a $380 billion national champion over a PR spat
3) let's not forget that Anthropic is literally the only AI company approved to work on classified Pentagon systems (src: ft.com/content/7bbc4a…). You don't get that kind of clearance by being adversarial to the state. They're already deeper inside the machine than any of their competitors...
