Yes absolutely! Users first test each app by onboarding, performing KYC and depositing funds, then report their findings on friction, cost, trust and other key criteria. Each user submits recorded videos of their experience, which we use AI to analyze every frame for friction, retries, errors, hesitation, and UI patterns. Findings are pooled into a category-wide dataset to show benchmarks for performance. The data is live now: foliobusiness.com/rankings foliobusiness.com/analytics:

@TechCabal The gap between marketing promises and user reality isn't about speed or uptime anymore, it's the friction points that kill retention. Does the index catch those, or just surface level metrics?

PARTNER: Africa’s top fintech apps finally have a scoreboard. FOLIO’s Performance Index turns verified user testing into a public, citable ranking for African consumer startups. The first index covers 10 payments and remittance apps, tested by 200 verified users across the same signup-to-transfer flow and scored on friction, cost, clarity, trust, and likelihood to return. For startups competing in this space, the value is bigger than UX data: it’s earned media, investor credibility, and competitive positioning built on real user proof. Have an app? Get audited. Get ranked. Get cited. foliobusiness.com/rankings Read more: techcabal.com/2026/05/20/ins…

Here's something worth discussing in the African fintech space: The biggest competition for most payment apps and digital wallets isn't another app. It's the user's own hesitation. Across markets like Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana, users who've been burned by failed transfers, frozen accounts, and opaque fees arrive at every new app with a question running in the background: "Is this one safe?" If your onboarding doesn't answer that question clearly and early, you've already lost them, regardless of how good your product actually is.

The irony with compliance infrastructure is that the people it's ultimately meant to protect end users never see it. They don't see the SOC 2 or the AML framework. They see a KYC screen asking for their ID with no explanation of why. The trust that compliance is supposed to build never reaches the user because nobody designed the communication layer on top of the technology.

Compliance isn’t just an add-on. It’s built into the technology. From AML/KYC and SOC 2 to ISO and MiCA frameworks, @simonb_ldn explains why checking the compliance boxes is essential when building financial infrastructure for enterprises, fintechs and global payment providers.

A number worth sitting with if you build fintech products: 73% of users abandon financial apps during onboarding. That's not a product failure, it's a trust failure. Something in the first 60–90 seconds signals to a user that this isn't safe, this isn't clear, or this isn't for them. In African markets, where digital financial trust is still being built not assumed that moment of hesitation carries even more weight. Most teams know they have a drop-off problem. Very few know exactly which screen, which request, or which missing explanation is causing it. That's the gap FOLIO is built to close. FOLIO

A question for founders and product teams building fintech in Africa: If there was a public, independent index that ranked your app on real user experience, signup flow, KYC friction, funding trust, transfer confidence based on actual recordings from real users in your market: Would you check it? We think you would. And we think what you'd find would be useful. We're close to being ready to share what we've built. Follow along.

Over the past few weeks, FOLIO has been collecting something that doesn't really exist yet for the African fintech space: Structured data on how real users actually experience onboarding from homepage to signup, KYC, first funding, and first transfer across multiple payments apps. Real users. Real recordings. Real reactions. We're building a public index from this data. Not app store ratings. Not surveys. Observed behaviour from actual people using these products in real time. What we've found so far is genuinely interesting. We'll be sharing it soon

Here's something we keep observing across African fintech onboarding flows: The highest drop-off moments are almost never technical failures. They're trust failures. A screen the user didn't expect. A request that felt too early. A step that raised a question the app didn't answer. Users make a decision about whether to trust an app before they've used a single feature. That decision happens in the first 60–90 seconds, and it's invisible to teams who've never watched a real user go through their own flow. More on what we're building around this soon.

Most fintech teams in Africa track where users drop off. Very few have actually watched it happen. There's a difference between knowing your drop-off rate and knowing the exact moment a real user lost trust in your app. We've been paying attention to that difference.

GM CT We’ve officially completed testing for Chipper Cash, and all participants have received their $8 rewards. Big thanks to everyone who took part We’re now moving on to testing other fintech apps. The Bottom Line: To avoid launch-day controversy, projects should prioritize rule simplicity and proactive transparency over complex, hidden, or punitive "sophisticated" filters.

5/ The KYC "Rug" While users are pragmatic about identity verification, the timing of the requirement changes its nature. The Findings: Introducing KYC mid-campaign is the #1 "rugging" trigger in the entire study. The Perspective: Pre-launch KYC is seen as a cost-benefit decision; mid-campaign KYC is seen as a betrayal of the initial terms.

Anti-Sybil mechanisms are one of the most contested design decisions in crypto. We ran 12 polls on them with 2,005 participants. The finding: what the community predicts will feel “fair” for anti-Sybil filtering and what individuals personally believe is fair are consistently different. Projects are calibrating to crowd optics. Their community is calibrating to personal justice. That gap is why every major airdrop ends in controversy.
