This is the amazing Mary Ruddick and she was a guest on one of my favorite all-time podcasts on Peak Human, hosted by @FoodLiesOrg Mary battled debilitating autoimmune/nervous system disorders she claimed her doctors described as "incurable." But she overcame them while focused on a diet of nutrient dense ancestral soups. She is the one who gave me the idea of doing weeklong bone broth fasts and bone broth and egg fasts. I've even done a week of soup fasting and all of them led to about 5 pounds of weight loss without serious hunger. Broth is extremely filling as you all have may have heard me say. Mary has traveled the world and stayed with half a dozen indigenous peoples, including the Hadza and Maasai, and her keen observations on their lifestyle and health are fascinating and well told. She's very easy to listen to and I highly recommend you checking her out. Podcast link below.

I just wrote a paper on this problem in nutrition science: how we should distinguish traditionally prepared foods from industrial processed products It’s entering peer review now Hopefully the USDA and FDA start paying attention, because the current definitions confuse the public and protect junk food @SecKennedy

So the real question isn’t: “Is this processed?” The real question is: How much refined energy was added? Ground beef, cheese, sausage, sauerkraut = real food Refined flour snacks, sugary cereals, seed-oil junk foods = manufactured calorie products

We need to stop confusing food processing with junk food manufacturing Humans have processed food for thousands of years: • Grinding • Fermenting • Salting • Drying • Cooking Processing itself isn’t the problem The problem is refined energy added to food

@NeilXJohnson Some good points there, but that sounds like a lot of work for less of a payoff

@FoodLiesOrg I would add fresh tempered (germinated) home milled grains. Wheat, rye and barley are excellent sources for most of the B Vitamins and vitamin E. Note: Commercial whole grains are devoid of vitamins as a result of steam enzyme inactivation + water activity control kilning.

SUPPLEMENTS ARE LARGELY A SCAM They exist because the modern diet is not aligned with our biology If you eat these foods, you won’t need a single supplement

Notice the pattern: Real food = protein + micronutrients + bioavailability Processed food = energy with missing parts Supplements exist because modern diets are nutritionally bankrupt

Brazil nuts = selenium Mushrooms + sunlight = vitamin D Olive oil = polyphenols + vitamin E Salt = sodium + trace minerals These “small” foods prevent big deficiencies
