When I started to dive deeper into studying kanji, this is what my room looked like! The breakthrough for me was mnemonics. Are you struggling with kanji right now? This helped me, maybe it helps you, too: tofugu.com/japanese/kanji…

@ForJlpt hah! I hear ya I passed 1 years ago but I remember the one question that probably saved my ass “パンの外側は何と言いますか」 パンの肌 パンの外 パンの耳 パンの壁 The outside of a piece of bread is called “The skin” “The outside" “The ears” “The wall” Right answer, パンの耳

The Japanese language proficiency test is notoriously difficult but sometimes the questions seem a little bit unfair. Here is one asking you to find the incorrect version of the word “aji” (味) meaning flavor. You practically need a magnifying glass to figure it out. Hint⬇️

In the JLPT you will always find questions with kanji that are similar and easy to mix up…this practice series prepares you for this. (間違いやすい漢字) I did not even consider this when taking the JLPT for the first couple times. Therefore, this recommendation.

The great thing is that the answers can be found on the page that follows. The answer page also has furigana under the kanji. If you were not able to read the kanji in de Question sentence, you can look it up on the answer page. It also shows related words and kanji which helps!

皆さん、お久しぶり🌸 I am still living and learning Japanese. How about you? Today I would like to recommend a series I really like studying with. Especially when you are preparing for tests such as the JLPT this may come in handy. I do one page before sleeping every day.

@matt_in_tokyo If I had known this before, I would have chosen an IT, mechanic or engineer profession. But I‘ve seen people with bachelor degrees in English or literature in communication specialist positions so even if you‘re not an engineer, you could be sent to Headquarters in Japan as Expat

@matt_in_tokyo Working Visa: Find a company in your country that sends Expats to Japan. Live and work there for 1-3 years and go back or ask for an extension of your work / residence permit. No Japanese language skills necessary. Benefits: Company pays for rent, insurance and family.

The top 5 ways people come to Japan Sometimes people ask me how they can come to Japan. The best one for you depends on your circumstances and goals. Here's a list of some of the most common ways and my thoughts on them, then at the end is the way I came and often recommend. ———————————————— Method 1: Become an English teacher This is perhaps the most popular way for English speakers. It's also probably the most accessible - all you need is a college degree. But it also has some significant downsides. Teaching English typically provides a low salary with few opportunities for career progression. You might want to use teaching English as a way to get your foot in the country, but the problem is most jobs in Japan require Japanese, which is hard to learn on your own - even if you live in Japan. However, if you have a background in tech this could be a viable option - some tech jobs only require English. Jobs in other industries though can be difficult to make the transition without first learning the language. ———————————————— Method 2: Working holiday This way is actually pretty good - if you can get it. There are some strict limitations: - You need to be from a country with a working holiday agreement with Japan - You need to be age 18-30 - You need to show proof of savings The visa is only good for a year, so if you want to stay longer you'll need to find a job and eventually transition to a working visa. The requirements for a working visa are strict: you still need a college degree or 10 years' relevant work experience. And again, most jobs require Japanese, but a working holiday visa should give you ample time to study to a conversational level if you put your mind to it. So a working holiday is an excellent option to get your foot in the door, provided you have a plan about how to stay longer if that's your goal. ———————————————— Method 3: Tourist visa This is in my opinion an underrated way. If you're scrappy and self-reliant, you can probably go quite far with this. Almost anyone can get a tourist visa and it typically lasts for 3 months. In that time you're not allowed to work, but you are allowed to apply for jobs. You can often extend your tourist visa too to a maximum of 6 months. If you can afford to support yourself, you could learn Japanese at home, come to Japan on a tourist visa, apply to a lot of jobs and probably land something. At the very least, you could become an English teacher as a backup if you ran out of time. Again, you require a college degree or 10 years' relevant work experience for the work visa. ———————————————— Method 4: Cultural visa I've never met anyone with one of these visas. I just want to cover it because it's common to see it listed online. Theoretically you can ask an ikebana school or traditional martial arts school etc to sponsor a cultural visa for you. However, when I was researching martial arts schools many of the big ones said they did not offer this sponsorship. I'd probably recommend the working holiday visa if you're eligible for it because it's easier to get and you could still study the cultural activities you're interested in. Working holiday also comes built-in with the permission to work. ———————————————— Method 5: Get married I don't recommend getting married for a visa, though I've met several people who've chosen that option. On the other hand, if you happen to fall in love with a Japanese national (or someone with Japanese permanent residence) then you unlock one of the most powerful visas: the spouse visa. That visa allows you to live and work in Japan, and also gives you a fast track to permanent residency. You just need to have been married for 3 years, with over 1 year in Japan, and you can apply for the PR. Once you have permanent residency, you can work or not work as you please and so long as you abide by the laws you're golden. This is the absolute best way in my opinion... with the huge caveat that you need to luck into falling in love with someone with a Japanese passport/PR. ———————————————— Method 6: Language schools This is the path I chose and would generally recommend if you want to live in Japan long-term. The path looks like this: 1. Get a degree 2. Save some money 3. Go to a language school (they will sponsor your student visa) 4. Study for up to 2 years and get good at Japanese 5. Apply for a job in Japan continuing your original career This is the way I came here and I recommend it because you're hitting 2 birds with 1 stone: you get both a visa and you're able to learn the language, which massively widens your career options and deepens your experience living in Japan. Not all language schools are created equal. Best to try to get in touch with people who actually went to the school you're interested in. To me going to language school and living in a sharehouse with friends was one of the best experiences of my life, so I do recommend it if you can find a good one. ———————————————— What's the best way in your opinion? Cheers Matt #langtwt #nihongo

I‘ve been 6 month into my new job. This is all I wanted. My language skills have improved significantly thanks to this job, because I have to use japanese language on a daily basis. It‘s a blessing.

@am_kaz I don’t know if that is helpful in any way, but I would probably give him ideas on how to improve his english outside of work. (English movies, communities, apps) and whenever said person starts to „just want to practice“, apologize and say you have things to do?….

fun fact: I did nothing wrong. The name on my test voucher / Application form etc was written as should be: correct everywhere… and yes, it happened when it was printed on the certificate in Japan. That‘s what happened 1000%. I never imagined it would be so troublesome…
