Councilman Wegimont has finally been charged because the facts are undeniable. He didn’t just lose his temper. He used his position to physically attack someone who told the truth about his criminal record. That’s not just disgraceful—it’s dangerous. No one is above the law. Not in Washington, not in Rhode Island, and certainly not in South Kingstown. Wegimont doesn’t get a free pass because he sits on the council. This isn’t a one-time lapse in judgment. It’s part of a clear pattern of unhinged behavior from a man who has no business holding public office. When someone skips a vote to body-slam another elected official in Town Hall, they’re not fit to lead. They’re a liability. I’m grateful to the South Kingstown Police for acting quickly and professionally. They sent the right message: violence in politics will not be tolerated no matter who you are. Wegimont needs to resign immediately.

On Monday night, June 9, after attending the South Kingstown Town Council meeting, I was physically assaulted by Councilman Jay Wegimont. He stormed out mid-meeting, skipped a vote, and charged right at me. He proceeded to body slam me in the hallway and screamed in my face over a seven-month-old social media post where I mentioned his 3 DUIs. I tried to walk away. He followed me down the hallway, into the stairwell still yelling, still escalating. That’s when I pulled out my phone and hit record. The second he realized he was on camera, he changed instantly. He tried to calm himself down because in that moment, he knew: he’d been caught. This wasn’t a heat of the moment dispute. This was a calculated act of political intimidation. I’ve filed criminal charges and I am pressing charges. Wegimont should resign immediately. Political violence is un-American. I won’t be bullied. I won’t be silenced. I will always fight for what’s right.

I want to thank the SK police for launching a full investigation into this and for providing a police detail at all council meetings going forward.

In America, we settle political disagreements with debate not violence. What Jay Wegimont did to Anthony D’Ellena wasn’t a disagreement it was an assault. If elected officials can physically attack their rivals without consequence, we no longer have a republic. He must be held accountable. He must resign.
