Scottish artist George Wyllie gave the world a Straw Loco, a Paper Boat & more. George said he was For The Burds because burds claim their freedom.

“George didn’t believe someone would telephone him out of the blue to ask him to exhibit anywhere and it was clear from the beginning that his humour, inventiveness, and energy would be an asset to any organisation.”

My new Airts & Pairts revisits a story I wrote in 2008 for the 50th anniversary of The Glasgow Group. If you are interested in the recent history of contemporary art in Scotland, this might be your bag. Thanks to artist Sam Ainsley for the prompt. Link: open.substack.com/pub/airtsandpa…

George Ralston Wyllie was born in Shettleston, Glasgow, on this day in 1921. He said he was ‘disadvantaged by a happy childhood’; a reference to the fact that an unhappy childhood might be beneficial for an artist. Images courtesy Estate of George Wyllie.

The Wyllie family is sorry to hear about the death of hotelier extraordinaire, Ken McCulloch. Ken commissioned George at the ‘start’ of his career as an artist. George made sculpture for La Bonne Auberge and Charlie Parker’s, two of Ken’s early projects in hospitality.

Loved my visit to Seestadt with #turningthetide! There was a hint of George Wylie @ForTheBurds about the work of @JENNYMARKETOU with her paper boats and heritage boat installation . Loved it 🤩
