Your mother is problematic. Your father is problematic. Your son is problematic. Your aunt is problematic. The cashier at the local Tesco is problematic. You've probably bought a cookie from a bakery made by hands that have done unspeakable things. Every chocolate bar you've ever eaten has probably killed a 7 year old child slave in Cameroon. The gas that drives your car is fueled by engines of death. Every person who has ever smiled at you in the streets has committed some act that if you knew about it, would make you profoundly dislike them.
We have all been bad, small, petty, unlikeable, cruel, downright mean. Authors are not special "problematic" beings, they're just more public. Part of being an adult is recognizing that without mercy for our fellow human beings, and ourselves, we'd all be condemned to death. Reading fiction should help us understand that we're all irreparably tainted with evil, every system is corrupted, every line is broken.
And like, that's okay. That's what it means to be alive.

honestly i'm this close to quitting reading for good. every single author i actually love turns out to be problematic or worse. i'm so tired of finding out after i already got attached. feels like i can't enjoy anything anymore without a background check first

@Judnikki That was the case for most authors before social media, they either had no online presence at all or they had their own website with some basic autobiographical stuff.
Or they were S.M. Stirling, but we don't talk about him.

@ForTullos This is irritating, because an unpleasant person can be a good artist. There are many books, tv shows, films, paintings and more that are beloved and made by questionable people. And even with them being questionable, the art is still just as good.

When you get too precious with continuity you get boring stories too afraid to do anything.
We've seen that countless times with canon star wars novels and games over the past decade.
Better to make good pieces of art, with the art being the focus, even if you need to apply some band-aids later on.
