It’s a learning curve. I’ve been gardening long enough that it absolutely saves money, especially on vegetables and herbs that have perennialized on my property. Chickens are also low cost if fed scraps etc and not housed in an Instagram worthy coop. I also buy in bulk directly from local farms, which is cost saving. I guess my biggest issue is with defeatist messaging that says there’s no way to get around the system.

@ForagingForever It’s a pretty common premise, that these things will save money, and they simply wont. I know people dont like to hear it.

This is a lie that I see really starting to hurt people. The way back to saving money is definitely NOT getting chickens for eggs. Farming only really works at scale. Small farming is a hobby you need a salary to subsidize.
Aspiring-Misanthrope@An_Misanthrope

I think the way forward for families to eat healthy and save money is back to basics. Buy a 1/4 or 1/2 cow (averages out to $4/lb for about 160-280lbs of beef) make your own bread and flour at home, get chickens for eggs, etc.

@wallachiamn @kaitybella It’s not that complicated, its cooking. If someone fails the first few times it’s just food, and they may learn something. Stop being so overly protective and having such low expectations.

@ForagingForever @kaitybella they're capable but also I don't teach kids to ride a bicycle by throwing them on a motorcycle on the freeway, you know? Telling them to make every single thing from scratch right away is how you get people that just eat takeout and say "well I tried to cook but I'm bad at it"

Except as adults they have a right to make their own decisions unless they’ve been deemed legally incompetent. So if you think you’re going to demand that they do something they don’t want to that isn’t going to go the way you think it will. It’s their home, their money, it should be used for their care if the family cannot care for them.

@ForagingForever @GayBearRes Kinda like the decisions “we” were presented with & expected to accept when we were young … whether “we” liked it or not. No different here … other than the roles have reversed.

My Boomer parents retired to Florida about 10 years ago. Sure enough my parents’ health is declining. Instead of moving back to the house they never sold, their solution is that I uproot my wife and kids and move to Florida. Why are they like this? 1/2

@bigmonkeong Jesus was a Galilean Jew. Population genetics has established, unsurprisingly, that the modern groups with the closest genetic ancestry to Jesus are Samaritans and Palestinian Christians. Do you know what a Samaritan looks like? I suspect you don't. (Photo in next tweet.)

And I’ll tell you how that will go…they will continue to refuse due to a number of factors; cognitive decline, lack of insight to their conditions and needs, stubbornness. So then the choice becomes letting them continue to decline to a point where it’s critical and one of them is seriously injured or dies…or spend the money on the care they need and understand that people take priority over money.

@ForagingForever @GayBearRes I didn’t miss that part. But as their child, I would be firm w/where I stand. That I am not uprooting my entire family unit to move to a different state. The only choice they would be left with/offered (if I’m wanted/expected to be their caretaker) is for them to move back home.

@wallachiamn @kaitybella I was specifically commenting on the quality of homemade sauce compared to store bought. It’s not elitist to tell people they are capable of doing just as good or better than mass produced and overly priced products.

@ForagingForever @kaitybella look I make my own sauce but we don't need to get elitist with people we are trying to get to cook in the first place you wouldn't tell a child their finger paintings are just useless slop compared to a Da Vinci

@ForagingForever @GayBearRes Ya, great idea. NOT! Handing over EVERYTHING his family worked so hard for, to the MEDICAL MAFIA is not only 💯 STUPIDITY but also the laziest thing one could do! The system set this game into motion long ago for families too blind to notice! Move your parents HOME. End of story!

My grandparents, born in 1912-13, left school after 8th grade to go to work. When my grandfather had a young family and couldn’t find welder work in our area, he rented a room in NJ, only came home on weekends. My grandmother didn’t get her GED until decades later so she could become a Certified Nurses Aide. Then they raised me and my brother when my Silent Generation mother flaked out. They were resilient but no-nonsense people. Their faith was paramount in their lives.

I have a question. I see some young people talking about those born pre WW2 with reverence and then shitting on Boomers lately. Have any of you ever actually met any people born before 1945? Because they are not as nice as you would think and are unlikely to side with you/

"make your own bread zoomers" Yeah let's go back to the 1800s before the invention of SLICED BREAD because BREAD is apparently a luxury item.
icpolicy@icpolicy

@MithrasSoldier Sure you can. 50lb flour - $20 for 45 loaves. That's 50 cents per loaf, or about 2c/slice 5 dozen eggs - $10. That's 16 cents per egg. Let's use 3. Mayo, mustard, etc - $3/jar, enough for a month. 50 cents for a deluxe egg salad sando better than restaurant quality

Two surprising finds from looking into cholesterol: 1. It's been going down for decades. Sort of inverse tracks obesity. What we call "borderline high" is below mean for many decades 2. Dietary cholesterol peaked in 1945. 420 eggs per person annually was the norm at the time.
Simon Sarris@simonsarris

@ericaavey @bronzeageshawty cholesterol has been trending down for decades, what they are calling "on the higher side" @ 187 is actually below mean since we started measuring. measured cholesterol decline almost matches rise of obesity (not that I think it's causal I was just surprised when I found out)

@simonsarris The depressing point to me is that even when medical dogma is reversed, it cannot seem to penetrate the medical establishment. You are just as likely to hear backwards info about eggs, salt, fat etc from the mouth of your doctor as if it was 1980
