Two weeks ago I posted a job opportunity to my email list. Got over 100 applicants before we closed the posting. One girl followed up via email 5 separate times. Last week I replied to her and told her she seemed like a good fit, but we were going with someone else. Then I went and looked at her application again and thought to myself "you know, she could be really valuable for some other stuff I want to do on the content distribution side." This matched what she already had experience in. So I emailed her a second time and said "actually I could use your help with this - can we get on a call early next week?" The girl replied right away saying she was down and proposed a few times. I got busy and didn't reply. It's been a week now, and she hasn't followed up since. At first I was going to follow up, but then after a few days I decided to make it a test. I figured she would follow up and circle back. I've been super surprised that she hasn't. This is another thing I see a lot: freelancers and service providers who end up like the dog who catches the car. They put in all this effort to get a prospective client's attention, finally get it, and then don't know what to do next. The answer, of course, would be to continue following up. That really is where the money is. If she emailed me to set up a call, I would 100% hire her and she'd land a couple grand per month retainer for like 5-10 hours per week of work (she's in the Philippines so pretty sure that's solid money for her). If she doesn't follow up this week though, probably will move on. Even if she follows up next week, I don't know if I'll be as hot and bothered to take action, so she'll have to go through the courtship cycle all over again.
