1950: F1 is born
#OnThisDay 13 May 1950, the world witnessed the debut of the FIA World Championship of Drivers, with its first race, the 1950 British Grand Prix, held at Silverstone.
Officially titled the Grand Prix d'Europe and recognised as the season's fifth race, it was dominated by the Alfa Romeo cars. Nino Farina took the win, followed by his teammate Luigi Fagioli in second place, after Juan Manuel Fangio retired due to an engine issue, with Brit Reg Parnell also driving an Alfa Romeo, finishing third.
Not only did Farina win the first official F1 Grand Prix, he would also go on to win the first-ever Formula 1 World Championship at the end of the 1950 season.
Among those who attended the race were King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, and a crowd of more than 120,000 people.

Tragically, Lorenzo Bandini succumbed to severe burns #OnThisDay May 10, 1967, three days after his fiery crash at the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix. His Ferrari struck a lamp post, igniting the fuel tank while he was unconscious inside the overturned car.
Despite rescue efforts, Bandini, who had a notable career including a victory at the 1964 Austrian Grand Prix and wins at Le Mans and the Targa Florio, died following complications from his injuries.

Remembering the great Carroll Shelby, who passed away #OnThisDay, May 10 2012, at 89. He had a brief Formula One career, racing in nine GPs between 1958 and 1959. However, he became a legendary car designer, creating iconic vehicles like the Shelby Cobra. Shelby’s childhood was marked by heart issues that confined him to bed for years, but he overcame them to embark on a racing career. Health problems ultimately ended his time on the track shortly after his victory at the 1959 Le Mans 24 Hours with Roy Salvadori in an Aston Martin.
Under a license from British carmaker AC Motors, Shelby integrated an American engine into what became the Shelby Cobra. He continued to develop performance vehicles for brands such as Ford, Dodge, and Oldsmobile. Despite undergoing a heart transplant in 1990, Shelby remained active, designing the Shelby Series 1—a modern homage to his 1965 Cobra.
