Core-mantle geochemical exchange made the Quanta Magazine "Biggest breakthroughs of 2025 in Physics" list. I was flattered to be interviewed for their You Tube feature. youtu.be/CPoQkE9KaAY

In a new @ScienceAdvances paper, Asst Prof James Dottin shows Hydrogen may leak from the Earth's core into the mantle. "This means that some the the water you're drinking today might be seeing the surface for the first time since the Earth was formed." #sec-2" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Lava flowing from new vent system in this ongoing eruption on #Kilauea's middle East Rift Zone. Lava flowing downslope to brink of Nāpau Crater in channel more than 50 m (about 164 ft) wide, pouring over western cliffs to create lava falls. #HVO overflight video from Sep 19.

To all who attended the Workshop on Mantle Supply and Imaging Magmatic Systems—thanks for making it such a blast! Great discussions (and huge momentum I think!) on integrating multidisciplinary approaches to trace magma from the mantle to crust to volcano Thanks @NSF @SZ4D1!

I have never associated Saudi Arabia with volcanism, but it has the highest concentration of calderas that I have seen so far on this mission. Calderas are the sunken-in tops of volcanos that appears after an eruption. Is there another place on Earth with a higher number of calderas? Perhaps Lanzarote, where I participated in @esa PANGAEA course. Or perhaps Iceland. Unfortunately, Iceland is too far north to be seen from the ISS. Any other suggestions? If so, let me know and I will try to take some pictures. #Huginn #Volcanoes #PictureFromSpace

@Astro_Andreas @esa @esaspaceflight @ESA_EO Nice! Volc. features are best preserved in arid regions where erosion is slowest. Continental volc. fields also exist across the Sahara and SW North America. Iceland-like volcanism occurs on Sao Filipe, La Palma, and Fernandina islands. And Hawaii: Kilauea, Mauna Loa and Kia!

I love geography and maps, and one of my favorite things about living on @Space_Station for six months has been getting to spot something interesting on Earth and then go look it up on the map. Months in, I find it so satisfying to be able to glance out the window and know instantly what part of the world we are flying over - to feel that sense of familiarity with the planet. At the same time, I am always still “discovering” new places. So, in that spirit… Internet, tell me what spots you want to see, and I’ll do my best to find and take photos of them!

@lunarloral Alpenglow on volcanoes!!! Deceptively arid, these volcanoes are unique to ocean worlds with plate tectonics: mineral-bound seawater in the seafloor pulled to depths of ~150 km caused rocks to melt, producing viscous/sticky water-rich magmas that ascended to form stratovolcanoes.

@lunarloral Beautiful braiding! The circuitous path of the Brahmaputra has puzzled scientists for decades. The E-W trending northern portion probably predates the India-Asia collision and was later captured/redirected southward. Remarkably, this river is older than the Himalayas themselves!

@lunarloral Wow! The most stunning yet! Image 2 appears to be the Panj River on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border. The mountains in this area may be especially high because, beneath them, the Asian lithosphere is peeling away and sinking (figure from Chapman et al., 2017, GSAB):
