In a lot of ways, the protestant reformation was just dour people being fun police.

#OTD March 31, 1515: Needing money to rebuild St. Peter’s basilica, Pope Leo X announces a sale of indulgences to run for eight years beginning this day. Albert of Brandenberg, deeply in debt after purchasing his position as archbishop, is allowed to keep half the proceeds, but will not profit as greatly as he hopes because the indulgence will anger the friar Martin Luther, who will post his Ninety-Five Theses in response. The Reformation will result.

In The Passion of the Christ, there is a disturbing scene where Satan is shown holding a deformed baby while Jesus is being whipped. Mel Gibson said the scene was meant to be a dark version of the Virgin Mary and child, meant to mock purity and innocence. While Mary watches her Son being tortured, Satan mirrors her by carrying a demonic child through the crowd. This scene suggests that Evil appears to show care for its child, while God seems to have left His Son to suffer alone.

Pope Leo XIV on Palm Sunday, forcefully denounces those who use God to justify war: “Brothers and sisters, this is our God, Jesus, King of Peace, who rejects war, whom no one can use to justify war. He does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, but rejects them saying “Though you make many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood.”
