@RazanAhamed6 What is unacceptable is watching India double down on oil extractions while we fight over “sustainability” like a first world country. It would be criminal for the generations of Sri Lankans to come if we don’t capitalise on this opportunity.

Nonsense. Crude oil drilling can pollute marine biodiversity & damage fragile ecosystems. clean water sources may be contaminated & farming, fishing could be badly affected. the better solution is shifting to renewable energy like solar wind & other green alternatives.

Sri Lanka is estimated to be sitting ontop of three trillion cubic feet of natural gas and several billion barrels of crude oil. Tapping into a fraction of this could significantly change our balance of payment issue. Why isn’t this a bigger priority? themorning.lk/articles/sxXJo…

@Jeya2002 @RazanAhamed6 I agree that there are risks to this, but the rewards are several folds bigger. Sri Lanka has struggled with a balance of payment deficit. This has led to currency devaluation since our independence. Something like this is once in a generation. It could change the game.

@ForzenStur @RazanAhamed6 See about deep water horizon oil spill , and if such risk is there atleast subsidies should be given regionally, instead of state swooping in and Indian private elite reaping benefits

@Jeya2002 @RazanAhamed6 Exploration will be in the manner basing, which is in the ocean. I don’t believe people farm in the ocean. We are also building a 200k barrel a day refinery in Hambantota. If this succeeds, maybe the next generation of youth can have more fruitful careers, nationwide.

Just to tease on the potential of petroleum product exports, it is estimated that Sinopec’s $3.7B refinery could add 6-8 billion USD in annual export value. - That equals our annual remittance from expats. - Double what we bring through tourism. seetaoe.com/details/251399….

@RazanAhamed6 These will be offshore rigs. And I’m mainly focusing on petroleum product exports, not for local use. Even Sinopec’s $3.7b refinery is expected to bring the country exports of $6-8 Billion. Oil rigs would help our BoP issue significantly. seetaoe.com/details/251399….

@ForzenStur Climate change is the big issue that exceeds carbon use. also our country with potentially has thick green density in South Asia. I can't hope to lose this. Anyways I'm opposed this bad idea.

@wickramage That’s how market forces work. Factories come and go based on what market their manufacture for. Some will close, some will thrive. Gymshark: youtu.be/2zQh9Phv2wE?si…

@ForzenStur Is that why we shut down factories each time there is a minor cost escalation? Your google search wont give u margins of manufacturing just retail element of them!

@RazanAhamed6 About Express pearl, it happened regardless of whether we were in the value chain. SL lies next to a corridor. A spill can potentially happen at any point (oil ship) I’d rather profit from that risk than nothing at all. Our ppl deserve a shot at development and prosperity

@ForzenStur risk adjusted returns are negative.. prudence favors renewables & incremental capacity building better imo.

@wickramage We manufacture high end garments for the most part. And with regards to tea, there is room for upscale. We have to switch from bulk sales to packeted exports.

@RazanAhamed6 At the time we barely had enough USD to keep our lights on and fuel our vehicles. This is what I mean. The richer we are, the more money we have to spend on sustainability. We can barely build a highway without looking for a foreign loan. We don’t have the liberty.

@ForzenStur Is the claim “We have the capability to protect our environment” truly credible? Even the Express Pearl blaze could not be extinguished within our EEZ, so how can our marine officers safeguard offshore assets from major incidents? We face far more disadvantages than advantages.

@Scippio624 Estimates place them between 2-5 billion barrels. Thats about how much Oman has. But none of them are proven, though some sources claim that about 4-5 oil fields have been proven.

Upon further research, I came across this article: - Negotiations with selected inv on the terms of the PRS are scheduled to conclude by Aug 2026. - Block awards and operational approvals expected by Nov 2026. - Initial exploration activities anticipated to commence by Dec 2026.

@ForzenStur No developed country relies solely on tourism. And it doesn’t offer high end employment. Remittances are also an unstable trap. Sri Lanka needs to offer real economic opportunities for its people and elect politicians that deliver.

@beaow42 Tourism also accounts for around 10% of inwards foreign currency. Exports of goods and services as well as remittances bring in significantly more.

@beaow42 Tourism being a net positive for foreign currency is debatable. There is a lot of dollars that leave the country. More info below:

@sonaljay8 @Chathurangaab @grok Here is the link to the interview that both Dilith and Chathuranga agreed that tourism doesn’t actually bring much Forex. Time stamp 1:43:44: talks about how the local value addition for every $ spent is extremely low and that 90% of the industry is sustained through imports
