I often think about how it's fundamentally arbitrary that "losing" in a game makes you feel bad or want to ragequit. It's a relic of the coin arcade days, but in most new games they have to directly signal to the player that "losing" is bad. Games that don't do this are visionary

'Too many games let their players succeed' says developer of notoriously tough survival RPG Kenshi, and 'that's mind-numbingly boring to me' pcgamer.com/games/survival…

@Hyperdrive_C @That0ddB0y It's a reference to the game Metal Gear Solid where you play as a guy named Solid Snake and one of the villains is Liquid Snake, his evil twin

@That0ddB0y why did we even cll them solid and liquid chris

@ControlledPairs I always liked how in Counter Strike the need to re-buy your weapons & equipment when you die means on the CT side when the terrorists have planted the bomb you need to decide if you think you have the time to retake the site and disarm or if you should just run & save your gear
English

Extraction shooters are interesting because they create tension and consequence. The goal is to survive raids so that you can collect more loot, complete tasks, and pile up gear that makes you more lethal. Dying means you lose loot and progress more slowly.
The high consequence nature of combat in these games is enticing. It adds weight to each encounter. Players experience gear fear, get the shakes, and behave differently in high consequence games than they would in a typical shooter.
Extraction shooters are great at creating these types of experiences, but the market is saturated with the genre and its far from the only way to curate amazing moments.
Zomboid manages consequential combat in a completely different way. As does DayZ and many of the other open world survival crowd.
What other game designs create similar high consequence combat?

@DocStrangelove2 Glocks are overrated.
The M9 was a good handgun that got more hate than it deserved, but it's ugly looking.
