I found @ShamelessPopery’s recent assessment of the SSPX’s objections to Vatican II to be well worth watching. He engages SSPX videos, articles, and priests directly, cites pre-conciliar sources in defense of Vatican II’s teachings on religious liberty, ecumenism, and collegiality, and is intellectually honest about the limits and misunderstandings surrounding those themes. Priest-friend got a call this week from an elderly parishioner asking if he had any need for the old high altar that's been sitting in his garage for the last 50+ years. The idea of an entire generation of viejitas quietly saving these things for a future generation of priests is kind of wild. It'll be reinstalled in the parish within the next six months.

This morning's Office of Readings features St. Ambrose connecting Psalm 43 (42) to the mystery of the Eucharist in De Mysteriis. It's fascinating to see that the Church has associated this psalm (Introibo ad altare Dei) with the Eucharistic liturgy for nearly 1,700 years....

Yesterday marked the anniversary of Traditionis Custodes. As I reflect on the past five years, I can only say that the Traditional Latin Mass and the traditional sacraments have been a tremendous gift to my priestly identity and a powerful instrument for the salvation of souls. I continue to pray that Pope Leo XIV will reconsider Traditionis Custodes in a way that preserves the Church's unity while allowing these treasures to continue bearing fruit for the faithful.

Now flip it to the other side. So many people complain about liturgical abuses and heterodox positions among those associated with the NO (take the German Synodal Way, for example). Does that mean that the NO is problematic? No. That would be blaming the Mass. Every time we effectively blame the Mass, making it guilty by association, then we only distract from the issues. It’s not about appeasing the SSPX. It’s about caring for those who are in communion, assent to the teaching and authority of the Church, and who love the TLM. If appeasement were the strategy, excommunication is a really weird way to do it
