Today, WI lawmakers saw through the con of election-year gimmicks with long-term threats to our stability. We will fix the real structural issues our schools and communities face, but that takes smart and intentional investment, not backroom deals and high-pressure tactics.

The responsible thing is to use one-time money to prepare for the crisis we can all see coming, not spend it before the crisis hits. I’ll keep telling the truth about what this deal will cost, because that’s what Wisconsin needs from its next governor.

Medicaid isn’t the only thing at risk. Forcing Wisconsin into an arbitrary deficit means we’ll have to put out fires — set by retiring politicians in secret meetings — before we can focus on the big, substantive investments in our state we need after 15 years of Republican rule.

I’ve been running on fully funded schools since day one. When I’m governor, I’m going to do this the right way: with a tax code that ensures corporations and the super rich pay their share. Working-class people get tax relief, schools get what they need. Permanently.

In moments of crisis, we need bold, courageous actions. But boldness does not require shortsightedness and courage doesn't mean concession. Wisconsin deserves a governor who tells the truth about what's coming and plans to take it head on.

That means I know all too well that you don't spend your reserves before the crisis hits. You don't hand your successor a fiscal hole as a parting gift. And you don't trade your state's future for a cheap political win.

@GovEvers' bargain with the GOP is bad for Wisconsin, and I will be voting no. This backroom deal is a payday loan taken out at the expense of our children, our infrastructure, our economy, and our future.

@TomTiffanyWI's Republican Party has spent years hollowing out our state agencies, which don't have the resources to deliver the services our taxes pay for. These are real problems that require real solutions, and this approach only increases the chances of crisis.

Our rural hospitals are already at risk of closing; some already have. Working families are about to face expensive, counterproductive federal work requirements that could cost them their BadgerCare coverage.
