Wait I was told repeatedly that Americans can’t do these jobs? 🤔

@YountLabOSU @NeurobioGirlPhD These people are not there to run your science, they are there to advance their own careers! You shouldn’t ask how you can keep them longer, but rather how you can help them transition into a long-term, viable career. That is your job.

@NeurobioGirlPhD I did not ask why. I actually explained why (higher salary and path less uncertain). Doesn't mean I can't be sad or frustrated about good people moving on from my lab. I was trying to add to the conversation that we need to do better in making academics a more desirable career.

Had my 3rd long-time lab member in the past year leave for a job in industry. I'm always happy for the success of my trainees, but how does academia compete with double salary and a much clearer path to advancement?

@YountLabOSU @NeurobioGirlPhD These jobs (with virtually no chance of advancement, no agency, and abysmal salaries) are not careers. You are “sad or frustrated” that people are leaving these temporary positions behind and enter real careers. Sounds a bit tone deaf.

@arjunrajlab @monica_rieth I wholeheartedly disagree. It is called „pathway to independence“. If you are independent by the time you receive the award it doesn’t serve its intended purpose. Problem is the high expectation of productivity which biases towards ‚senior’ postdocs who are ready to move on.

@monica_rieth I agree completely, take the job. I am lamenting the fact that they got this award and should be able to take it with them as they start said job, not have to give it up due to administrative nonsense.

Every time I see K99* *declined due to acceptance of faculty position I wonder again what the goal of that program was in the first place.

@michaelmina_lab @EmoryUniversity @NIH What I mean is that we have no idea how good this modeling is until we get the actual real-world data to confirm no change in analytical sensitivity. We need evidence of how solid this modeling is before it has any chance of becoming a golden standard.

Please Note: YES! The current rapid tests *DO* detect all known COVID-19 variants - including BA.5 This terrific paper from @EmoryUniversity and @NIH RADx did a great job at exhaustively evaluating this question AND 1/🧵 cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

Read my analysis of the significance of Iran’s recent protests from a gendered lens, with attention to its history, by drawing from my research on women’s political participation in the country. #MahsaAmini washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/…

So proud of our #RADx team’s work @childrensatl @EmoryUniversity @GeorgiaTech in collaboration with @US_FDA that was just published in @JAMA_current demonstrating that kids as young as 4 can adequately swab themselves for COVID-19 testing. Might save a few tears (parents too)!
NIBIB@NIBIBgov

A #RADx team found that kids can self-swab for PCR-based lab tests for #COVID19. This study provides data to support recommendations regarding self-swabbing that can be implemented by schools & other group settings @EmoryUniversity @childrensatl @WilburLam nibib.nih.gov/news-events/ne…

Excited to share my inaugural tweet: Ever wondered if your COVID antigen test can detect variants? We evaluated the binding of 17 diagnostic antibodies from 11 tests against all possible mutations in the Nucleocapsid protein (=the antigen): the tests work! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
