Need an up-to-date #TreeofLife for teaching/conferences/wall paper? Talented PhD student @BasileBeaud drew a schematic consensus ToL from the most recently published phylogenies. Hope this is useful! Downloadable version in the thread👇
Overwhelmed by the history-filled room where I presented the @SEVAplasmids to the partnership of the NYMPHE Project. Looks like the mythological giants painted in ceiling of our meeting room of Palazzo Poggi in Bologna are looking at our vectors (pic courtesy of Abraham Esteve)!
How did life evolve to synthesize Fe-S clusters? Our last paper is out! Thanks a lot to my supervisors @SGribaldo and @FredBarras and to our collaborators! Thread follows.1/11

Why virtually all bacterial proteins are multimeric? Is it because it facilitates regulation? Is it essential for catalysis? Is it possible to create monomeric versions of naturally-occurring multimeric enzymes that keep full activity? Any systematic study on this 🤔?
Is it OK proposing (what may look like) impossible projects? IMHO it's the only way to push the boundaries. But funding bodies just wanna see predictable stuff. Some even ask how many papers one expects to publish in what journals—pathetic. Be realistic: demand the impossible 💪🏻
PhD student @BasileBeaud bravely defending his arguments on cell envelope evolution at summer course #EMBOnewmicrobiology in Spetze. Hope you're not giving him too much of a hard time @TypasLab! 😉👍
Our dear friend and colleague Joseph (Pepe) Casadesús passed away earlier today. He was a legend of Spanish microbiology, an amazing mentor of many young researchers and an inspiration for the whole community. He will be sorely missed RIP.
Congratulations @juedwang (U Wisconsin) and @michael_laub8 (MIT) on a great Microbial Stress Responses @GordonConf this week! Wow! Great meeting, super science! Thank you!
The GRC/GRS on Microbial Stress Response was simply fantastic -- one of the best meetings I've ever attended. Excellent science and wonderful people. Truly a special community. Thanks so much to organizers @JanUlrikDahl1, @juedwang, @michael_laub8, @chienlab, and @SchmidLab!
And thanks to our fearless future leaders @chienlab, @SchmidLab, @StallingsLab, and @FredBarras. Already cannot wait for the next iterations, and seeing great friends and colleagues there!
Also, thanks @GordonConf for making these wonderful meetings possible.
