The Flyers' most immediate step will not be to find an alternate 1C target. Rather, I think the rest of the off-season will be pretty quiet unless there's a trade than develops under the radar. 1) Matvei Michkov is an RFA next summer. An extension will be needed. 2) As with Beckett Sennecke in Anaheim, Porter Martone is eligible for a proactive extension next summer, taking effect for 2028-29. 3) The overall main focus likely shifts back to young players developing more. 4) I do think the Flyers could seek a stopgap PP defenseman for 3rd pair at 5-on-5 and PP duty. The alternative is hoping someone like Jiricek is ready and can handle it. (I'm not very comfortable with that).

Regardless of how this ends (I still will be shocked if it isn’t matched but I’ve been wrong before), I’ll be fascinated to see what Verbeek says when he’s pressed on botching this. My respect for him will increase if he owns it but I don’t expect that. Again, you can have a really good eye for talent which he does and absolutely suck at other things (like negotiating and maintaining relationships)

There's something missing behind the Carlsson offer sheet. Verbeek and Briere have, on the surface, had a good working relationship and made several large trades that helped both teams. Something doesn't sit right with me. Someone somewhere forced this situation.

Leo Carlsson isn't worth 18M per. Anaheim sets itself back by matching. Losing Leo sucks but he's replaceable, four first round picks from a team that's missed the playoffs five of the past six seasons is smart work for a soon to be contender. Philly can have Leo. Enjoy.

One big difference between #Flyers offer sheet of Shea Weber in 2012 and Leo Carlsson in 2026 is the massive cash up front isn’t poisonous for Anaheim like it was for Nashville. The belief was Preds needed a cash call from their large ownership partners to match Weber signing bonuses. It was stressful to pay that much in such a short period of time, and beautifully designed to hit that pressure point. Henry Samueli is now one of the wealthiest owners in the #NHL. If it’s a question for #FlyTogether to match, it’s about team cap structure and little more. It’s also a reminder for the Ducks that negotiating as hard as they typically do - grinding every player to a stump with their leverage - might feel good in the moment, but could cost you dearly in the long run. The best way to not be subject to an offer sheet is to get the player signed last summer or in the middle of last season. Because even if they’re keeping Carlsson, their future is jammed up with the highest paid player in the league (AAV) in key RFA years where had Verbeek/Solomon swallowed hard and “overpaid” it would still be paltry to $18 mil. What’s that saying? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
