What we didn't know 10 years ago when we were working to stop the incinerator was that City Schools launched a commercial compost pilot with local haulers. The vision was beautiful but it was cut short by interests that are invested in more waste. We are up against a lot...

(2) now we want City Schools and all local educational institutions to choose to support local compost and Zero Waste infrastructure by taking the lead in pledging their food scraps to a local Baltimore based facility.

(1) ~10 years ago we, as high school students, started the process of stopping the plan to build the nation's largest incinerator here in Baltimore. City Schools were lined up to buy their dirty energy and we convinced them to choose not to...

Here's the problem...we are well into the administration and we still don't know their approach to getting a local compost system built. This is not ok and respectfully, it's a challenge but not rocket science. Our public leaders owe us more transparency @MayorBMScott !

We need urgent action to back up the strong commitments made to transition away from burning and burying. #zerowaste @MayorBMScott @BaltimoreDPW

What's up w/ Baltimore NOT starting the development of compost infrastructure already? There's the state law, a Mayor who says he will do everything to break reliance on BRESCO, and institutions, communities, workers and operators ready to go...what's up @MayorBMScott ?
South Baltimore Community Land Trust@BaltimoreSouth

How do we know when our institutions & large food waste generators are taking concrete steps for #ZeroWaste? One way is if they contract for hauling their food scraps to be composted instead of landfilled/ incinerated. County Schools are doing it...City Schools can too.

@pierre_delecto2 @MayorBMScott @BaltimoreDPW this is exactly what @BaltimoreSouth and the Zero Waste community labor coalition are working on. Maryland Law now requires large generators to stop burning/burying food/organics but without a compost facility within 30 miles of Baltimore it's not going to happen.

@MayorBMScott @BaltimoreDPW Are there any incentives or efforts to get restaurants or other large-scale sources of compostable material on board?

We’re working to build Baltimore’s capacity to divert more food waste from the residential waste stream. Learn more about our @BaltimoreDPW pilot program to expand composting drop off locations:

#DYK? Food scraps make up 25 % of the City's residential waste stream, according to a recent sort of residential trash. Under a new pilot program, residents can now drop off food scraps for composting at a DPW Residential Drop-off Center. Hours, Locations: buff.ly/3yQbXxe

Yes! Now it's time to build Baltimore's own compost infrastructure so we can take all food out of the waste stream. Burn/bury food waste = climate injustice and disaster. Zero Waste = good union jobs, local hiring, concrete community and environmental benefits

@izzy_elise_ We have algorithms coming out of top research institutions to match us w/ wine but are struggling with systems to reuse and recycle the glass after the wine is finished. Instead, the glass gets burned or buried. (1)

Yes! Reuse systems = a big part of clean air, reducing toxic pollution and combatting climate catastrophe. Let's define reuse systems as also generating union jobs, worker ownership and community governance.

#WeChooseReuse! Reuse systems have existed in the past. We took a wrong turn but it's fixable! Now we have technology to make these systems seamless and easy for the businesses, municipalities and the individual! breakfreefromplastic.org/we-choose-reus…

We want a mayor who invests in Black communities, invests in public education of our children, a mayor who will support the building of Rec centers, green spaces in Poppleton. We want people to stay in their homes; community-led “development” not demolition and displacement !
