Major Jealous Divine) #FreedmenHistoryMonth In the hardest years of the Great Depression, Father Divine and the Peace Mission built something rare: a system that fed people, housed people, and put people to work while insisting Black dignity didn’t require begging. He organized “Heavens” (communal homes/hotels) where people could get meals, shelter, and job connections, and he became known for lavish banquets held daily, a public rebuke to scarcity and segregation. The Peace Mission’s “Holy Communion Banquet Services” became a signature ritual, served multiple times a day across their properties bringing people to the table when America was shutting doors. Food wasn’t just charity.
