Our new TEX86-SST records (Site 696, U1536), compared with available SST records, reconstruct South Atlantic changes as the Southern Ocean deepens and widens. Low early Oligocene SST gradient = gyral circulation. High Miocene SST gradient = strong circumpolar current

As the Drake Passage deepened it cooled Antarctic coasts and increased the Australia - Antarctica temperature gradient ultimately enhancing thermal isolation of the Ice sheet
