We're proud to announce we're moving away from investment in fossil fuels. By 2025, we'll divest from companies whose primary business is the ownership and exploitation of fossil fuels as part of our commitment to being a world-leader in climate science. newsroom.unsw.edu.au/news/general/u…

@paul_n_pearson You seem to forget the Dutch “urgenda” case? Google it, that was quite spectacular last December. In any case, great to see change is coming!

60 years of the Antarctic Treaty! today is Antarctica Day! #OnThisDay #OTD in 1959, 12 countries agreed to set aside #Antarctica “for peaceful purposes only”, as a scientific preserve for "the progress of all mankind”. Today 54 nations are party to the Treaty.

@MargotCram However it is really difficult to show the rate of collapse that has occurred in these geologic events. I also have problems with the work "retreat" in this matter, as it is a notion of the "action" rather than the "end state" that is reconstructed.

@MargotCram the word "collapse" is often used in this paleocontext, and then relates to the observation that the ice sheet is "much smaller than at present". Such reconstructions provide clues to the new equilibruim state of the ice sheet under a warmer climate condition,...

@rdlarter @flimsin @AGCGraham @nick_golledge Part of this misunderstanding may be that paleo sometimes uses the word ‘collapse’ of the ice sheet in past warm climates while they actually document a ‘retreated’ ice sheet, with no information on the rates of change that occurred. Job for reviewers!

@flimsin @AGCGraham @nick_golledge I mean actual physical palaeo evidence of widespread collapse. I'm well aware that there are model studies that say the WAIS should have collapsed, and the difficulty of explaining the sea-level highstand otherwise.

Interesting commentary, but this statement caught my eye: “Palaeo-evidence shows that such widespread collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet has occurred repeatedly in the past.” 1/2 Climate tipping points — too risky to bet against nature.com/articles/d4158…

"She's going down!" Shackleton shouted #OnThisDay #OTD in 1915 Endurance finally sank beneath the sea ice of the Weddell Sea, all survived. Built in Norway in 1912, the ship was sold to Shackleton in 1914. "Fortitudine vincimus" (By endurance we conquer) - Shackleton family motto
