Clean indoor air is a shared goal. Many of us—across organizations, initiatives, and advocacy groups—are working to make it real. We may differ on timelines or tactics, but let’s not lose sight of where we want to go. Which groups do you see pushing in the same direction?

Because we get this wrong, we also fail to ask important questions about ventilation/filtration during outbreak investigations. What do we know about ventilation/filtration.. …on the cruise ship? 🤷‍♂️ …at that birthday party? nuthin’ …the wake? ❓ …hospitals where h2h happened? 🤔

"In any outbreak, the single most important question is: How does it spread?,” @j_g_allen writes. We got it wrong at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with hantavirus, we're getting it wrong again: theatln.tc/sT7M4SPA 📸: Andres Gutierrez / Anadolu / Getty

A "mask break" is an example of the psychological defense mechanism of compartmentalization, or holding 2 conflicting ideas simultaneously to artificially reduce anxiety. "Masking" while not masking feels good but does little. x.com/michael_hoerge…
Mike Hoerger, PhD MSCR MBA@michael_hoerger

#4 – Compartmentalization – Holding two conflicting ideas or behaviors, such as caution and incaution, rather than dealing with the anxiety evoked by considering the incautious behaviors more deeply (hypocrisy) Hospitals and clinicians claim to value health/safety but then don’t require universal precautions Public health officials claim to value evidence but then give non-evidence based advice (handwashing over masking), obscure or use low-value data over high-quality data (self-reported case counts over wastewater), etc. Getting a flu vaccine but not a Covid vaccine Interviewing long Covid experts who recommend masking in indoor public spaces but then going to Applebee’s Masking in one potentially risky setting (grocery store) but not masking in another similar or more-risky setting (classroom) Infectious disease conference where people are unmasked Long Covid and other patient-advocacy meetings where only half the people mask In-person only EDI events Not testing because it’s just family Mask breaks

🚨BMJ Opinion: “Hantavirus outbreak should reset WHO’s default approach to airborne risk” “For pathogens with documented person-to-person spread […], the initial assumption should be AIRBORNE risk unless and until evidence supports easing back.” bmj.com/content/393/bm…

Discomfort isn't a public health strategy. Many of us find N95s perfectly comfortable. Using discomfort to justify avoidable exposure is another major leadership failure from @WHO
Disclose.tv@disclosetv

NEW - WHO's Tedros responds to pictures that have been circulating online of one of the passengers not wearing a mask: "Many of these passengers are elderly and you can imagine how uncomfortable it could be when you have, especially FFP2 masks."

Pro-Tip: When a pathogen (A) spreads via “Close contact” and (B) infects anywhere in the respiratory system, this means that the pathogen is AIRBORNE. Mask. Filtration. Ventilation. Clean the air.

HANTAVIRUS OUTBREAK In yesterday’s WHO press briefing, Maria Van Kerkhove announced several BIG changes to their recommendations. 🚨ALL passengers & crew from the MV Hondius should now be classed as HIGH-RISK contacts & be isolated for 42 days. For details, see thread below ⬇️

A study suggests that many older adults who died of COVID-19 weren’t close to death before infection. In fact, 28% would likely have lived at least another 5 years if they hadn't contracted the virus. Read more: ow.ly/j4V150YXREy

Since launching support for the Andes virus species of hantavirus two days ago, we've received submissions from four countries' sequencing teams. This is a testament to the rapid response of researchers, sharing real-time data. Read more in our news post: pathoplexus.org/news/2026-05-1…

1/n: I could be wrong, of course, but my take about this hantavirus outbreak is less about the actual outbreak and more about what it means in the context of the last two decades and moving forward. Let me explain...

Honestly, not trying to stir things up or be a contrarian or anything. I do forensic investigations of sick buildings frequently and I approached this w same curiosity - I’m trying to be objective about what’s known and not known, and wanting to understand how it’s spread (so we know how to protect people!) and after reading the parroting about “prolonged close contact”, I went and read the best outbreak investigation we have to date on h2h hantavirus spread and assumed I’d find supporting evidence. Instead I learned that nowhere in that NEJM does it show prolonged close contact is required. In fact, many examples of *the opposite* It’s not esoteric or fear-mongering; it’s important we get this right: -to keep people safe from this, including those who were on the ship, contacts and their families, and the treating medical teams -don’t miss anyone w contact tracing (are we only looking for people w “prolonged close contact”??) -learn as much as we can about Andes strain transmission (there’s very little published on outbreak dynamics)

Story from the community: Someone needed surgery and brought a box of 10 respirators to the hospital. All 4 doctors wore them in the operating room, and after the operation, the box was almost empty. If you can, make it easy for healthcare workers to do the right thing.
