South China Sea: China Coast Guard drives away intruding Philippine vessels at Huangyan Dao According to a CCG spokesperson, on July 23, two Philippine official vessels ignored repeated dissuasion and warnings from China and forcibly intruded into China’s jurisdictional waters off Huangyan Dao. Media personnel aboard the Philippine vessel were seen filming stand-up reports. The China Coast Guard took necessary measures to drive away the Philippine vessels in accordance with the law. This incident follows Philippine's provocation in waters off China's Ren'ai Jiao on July 20.

Satellite analysis estimates Beijing has buried roughly 19 square kilometres of living reef since 2013 to build military outposts complete with runways, radar installations, hangars and harbours. Chinese dredging accounts for about two-thirds of all reclamation damage across the sea. In 2015, Xi Jinping stood in the White House Rose Garden and said China "does not intend to pursue militarization" of the Spratly Islands in the SCS. Note the weasel wording: "does not intend," not "will not." Chinese clam-harvesting fleets also damaged another 66 square kilometres of reef, using boat propellers to excavate giant clams for the ornament trade. In 2016, an international tribunal found the environmental damage severe and irreparable, ruled that China had violated its duty to protect fragile ecosystems, and concluded that Chinese authorities knew about the destructive harvesting and failed to stop it. Then there is the ocean plunder of vast Chinese fishing fleets. China operates the world’s largest distant-water fishing fleet. Oceana’s analysis of vessel-tracking data found Chinese vessels accounted for 44 per cent of all visible fishing activity worldwide between 2022 and 2024. China also ranks worst on the global index measuring vulnerability to illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. So why is a party-state media outlet producing ocean-stewardship propaganda? Reef destruction and industrial overfishing are two charges Beijing cannot credibly answer, so "conservation" becomes their misleading narrative. And note the phrase "dual-track approach." That is Beijing’s formula for managing disputes bilaterally: one smaller claimant at a time, without tribunals, outside parties or collective leverage. Last September, China declared a "national nature reserve" at Scarborough Shoal, within the Philippine exclusive economic zone. The stated rationale seems ecological, but it's more geopolitical than anything else. A reserve requires rules, permits, patrols and enforcement. This is really about expanding Chinese influence into another country's jurisdiction using an environmental pretext to conceal Beijing's atrocious track record and true intentions.

Philippines must make correct decisions as bilateral relations reach crossroads The China-Philippines relations now stand at a crossroads, and it falls to the Philippine side to make correct, rational decisions about the path ahead, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Wednesday. Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during his meeting with Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro in Manila, the Philippines. The Chinese foreign minister elaborated on China's stern position to the Philippine side and lodged a strong protest against the reckless conduct of Philippine personnel ramming Chinese law-enforcement vessels at Ren'ai Jiao. Wang stated that China-Philippines relations have been beset by persistent difficulties and challenges over the past few years, which is clearly in neither side's interest and impedes the Philippines' own development. Both sides ought to jointly uphold the hard-won peace and development in the region, yet the Philippines is moving in the opposite direction to other regional countries, turning itself into a source of disruption to regional peace and stability. Facts have proven that allowing external forces to meddle in regional affairs and deliberately hyping up maritime disputes will only reduce the Philippines to a pawn manipulated by others, Wang said, adding that any attempt at provocation backed by external countries will ultimately leave the Philippines bearing the bitter consequences of its own making. He emphasized that to develop China-Philippines relations, it is crucial to grasp the right direction. China has never constituted a security threat to the Philippines, nor has it ever invaded or colonized the country throughout history. It is an objective reality that the two sides have disputes over territorial claims and maritime delimitation, Wang noted, saying that China has consistently committed to managing differences and stabilizing the situation through bilateral dialogue and consultation. The Philippines, however, abandoned bilateral negotiation mechanisms, assembled an ad hoc "arbitral tribunal" urged by extraterritorial forces, and manufactured and hyped up the so-called award, which is illegal and void. China has never accepted, participated, or recognized this "award" from the very outset, he said. The Philippines should immediately stop its provocative actions on maritime issues, abide by the commitments it has made to China to date, and take tangible steps to stabilize bilateral ties, Wang said. Lazaro remarked that the Philippines and China share a long history of exchanges, and are and will always be each other's neighbor. The Philippines remains committed to the one-China policy and its diplomatic commitments established upon the normalization of bilateral relations. There is but one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory.
