academics are unprepared for the coming world where much scientific progress is majorly a function of inference compute. whether OpenAI points the Eye of Stargate at your particular field will decide its acceleration. talent will leach away into the labs. it's already begun

I don't know how to properly explain this but graphics of MCM era upto the 90s appreciated a kind of expressive abstraction in marketing that's entirely missing in today's fast-fashion literal first-order stuff. If applied to mostly hard logic, empirical and objective fields like engineering and science; the result is an aesthetic that elevates both high-art and high-engineering to a spectacular degree. Franz Kline meets Richard Feynman. Barnett Newmann meets Claude Shannon. Extremely high IQ aesthetic and IMO peak marketing for an intellectually curious audience. Two arresting examples as follows:

My current smells of AI slop/writing: 1. Use of em dash "—". I haven't seen anyone seriously use this over a hyphen "-". Double points for wrapping — or making double points in a single sentence — give it away 2. Making a statement and then colon: like this 3. More subtle, but tone that is off-character for the authors

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life
