The difference is one takes a dark aspect of life and then extracts something funny from it. For instance, the joke Pete told during the Kevin Hart roast saying Kill Tony and Charlie Kirk have in common that they both takes loads to the throat.
That's taking something dark and creating a joke about it.
If you just take someone's death, and then go "haha, they're dead, and you suck." That's not actually a joke. That's just someone being unpleasant toward someone, which you COULD find funny as well.. but, still.. not a joke. It would just be you like it when someone you dislike is insulted.
