The 1970 NFL Standings and helmets. It was the first year the old AFL and NFL were combined post-merger. The Colts, Browns and Steelers agreed to move to the new American Football Conference with the AFL teams. The rest of the NFL teams formed the National Conference. The NFC was sorted by competitive strength of the teams, not by geography, which is why teams from different regions of the country shared a division. The Cowboys would lose to the Colts in the first Unified league Super Bowl.
